- Calm winds make for ideal casting conditions. Fish will be spooky in clear water — use light line and natural presentations.
- Overcast and light rain conditions are often the best fishing weather. Fish shallow and aggressive — bass are less wary.
- Falling barometric pressure activates feeding. Fish are on the move — work moving baits and cover water quickly.
- New and full moons are the best fishing phases. Solunar peak periods fall near sunrise and sunset — be on the water at first light.

Yes. All anglers age 16 and older need a SC fishing license to fish public waters in Beaufort. SC residents pay $10 for an annual freshwater license. Non-residents pay $35 annually or $11 for a 3-day license. Licenses are available at SCDNR.sc.gov or at local sporting goods and tackle shops. Two Free Fishing Days — May 25 (Memorial weekend) and July 4 — require no license.
-
Beaufort fishing is Lowcountry water — tidal creeks, the Beaufort River, Port Royal Sound, and nearby ACE Basin / coastal rivers — not Upstate municipal reservoirs. See the water body profiles above for the local list, species, and access.
-
Freshwater crappie are a secondary story here; most Beaufort anglers target inshore saltwater species and tidal-creek bass where freshwater mixes. Confirm seasons and sizes with SCDNR before you go.
-
Yes. Kayaks are a standard way to fish Beaufort River marshes and tidal creeks. Watch tides, wear a PFD, and respect private docks and oyster grounds.
-
Expect redfish, spotted seatrout, flounder, and other inshore species in salt and brackish water, with largemouth and panfish in true freshwater stretches farther inland. Match your license to the water you fish.
-
Beaufort is not an Upstate trout-stocking market. SCDNR trout plants focus on cooler Upstate and Midlands waters — check dnr.sc.gov if you are traveling north for trout.
