Snow and icy roads in the Lowcountry during a winter storm

News Summary

A significant winter storm has hit the Lowcountry, causing unexpected snow and icy roads, prompting the closure of schools, businesses, and local government offices. Residents are urged to avoid travel due to hazardous conditions, while public services, including waste management, are suspended. As the community copes with the cold snap, pet owners are reminded to keep their animals warm. This event has also led to the cancellation of community events, emphasizing the importance of safety during severe weather.

Winter Storm Disrupts Life in the Lowcountry

Charleston, SC – A major winter storm has swept through the Lowcountry, bringing unexpected snow and icy roads that have disrupted day-to-day life for residents. With businesses, schools, and public services closing their doors, many are adjusting their routines to cope with the harsh weather conditions.

Road Safety Becomes Paramount

One of the biggest concerns as the storm rolls through is road safety. Officials in Beaufort and Jasper counties are advising everyone to steer clear of driving if possible, as black ice and snow have created a hazardous situation on many local roads. Many have found themselves slipping and sliding while trying to navigate their daily commutes, and safety is now the top priority!

Local Government Offices Close Up Shop

In response to the storm’s challenges, a number of town offices have announced temporary closures. Hilton Head Town Hall will be closed for business on Thursday, January 23, and Friday, January 24, although online services are still available to the public. Residents can breathe a sigh of relief, as normal operations are expected to resume on Monday, January 27.

Over in Bluffton, town officials have also decided to close their offices on Thursday and Friday while team members work from home. The same goes for offices in the City of Beaufort; they too are taking a break until Monday, January 27. In addition, Beaufort County offices, along with their Convenience Centers, are set to stay closed for the duration of the storm, with updates on their status to follow.

Animal Services and Waste Management

With temperatures dipping, Beaufort County Animal Services is encouraging everyone to bring their pets inside to stay warm during this cold snap. It’s a good reminder that our furry friends need care and warmth, just like us!

Meanwhile, Waste Management services are on hold until further evaluations of the roads can be conducted, so residents are asked to keep their trash bins out of the way until regular service can be resumed.

Schools Adjust Their Schedule

The Beaufort County School District has decided to cancel all classes, including eLearning, on Thursday and Friday, with plans to resume a normal schedule by Monday, January 27. Jasper County’s schools will still offer eLearning during this period, but decisions for the upcoming Monday will be communicated soon.

Local Services Affected

Healthcare facilities like Beaufort Memorial Hospital aim to operate without interruption, providing for community needs. Novant Health facilities remain largely open but have specified some closures due to the weather. It’s a mixed bag for local grocery stores; while Publix, Kroger, and Walmart are open with normal hours, some shelves might be looking a bit sparse as residents stock up on essentials.

Transportation Services Take a Hit

All transportation services are impacted too. The local Palmetto Breeze Transportation Services have suspended operations for Thursday and Friday, and the airfields at Hilton Head Island Airport and Beaufort Executive Airport are closed due to ice. Even the ferry service to Daufuskie Island has been suspended, with future services dependent on safety conditions.

Community Events Canceled

The storm has also left its mark on community gatherings; the Town of Bluffton’s Park Party scheduled for Saturday, January 25, has been canceled but will be rescheduled for another day. This unexpected weather has certainly thrown a wrench in plans for many.

Stay Safe!

The general consensus from local officials? Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary! Emergency services need clear roads, and keeping travel to a minimum will help ensure everyone’s safety. Community shelters are open and ready to help those in need as the temperature continues to drop.

As the Lowcountry continues to weather this storm, the community’s adaptability will show, as residents work together to face the challenges of inclement weather. Stay warm, stay safe, and look out for one another!
