Bluffton Suffers Wastewater Overflow: 60,000 Gallons Escape into Open Near Major Intersection

Bluffton Faces Wastewater Overflow: What Happened?

BLUFFTON – A surprising turn of events unfolded on Sunday, December 8, when an estimated 60,000 gallons of wastewater escaped into the open near the bustling intersection of Okatie Highway and Lawton Boulevard. Residents were taken aback as the Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority (BJWSA) confirmed the mishap in a news release.

What Went Wrong?

The situation began to brew around 12:45 p.m. when a force main experienced failure, leading to the unfortunate overflow. Fortunately, BJWSA crews didn’t waste any time and jumped into action immediately after the incident was reported. They managed to halt the overflow by about 5 p.m., showcasing their quick response efforts in maintaining the integrity of the sewage system.

Clean-Up Operations in Full Swing

After containing the spillage, BJWSA crews rolled up their sleeves and got to work on repairing the pipeline, which was back in service by 1:30 a.m. the next day. Residents can rest easy knowing that cleanup operations are already underway to deal with any residual sewage. This all occurred while the wastewater trickled towards a nearby retention pond and wooded area east of Pickett Mill Boulevard.

Keeping the Community Informed

To keep the public informed and safe during this incident, BJWSA has put up signs in the area warning about the overflow. This proactive measure shows their commitment to safeguarding the community’s health and safety. So, if you see any signs or notices around the affected area, it’s always best to heed those warnings.

Regulatory Compliance

Adding to the accountability, BJWSA has reached out to the S.C. Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) and is working hand-in-hand with them to ensure that all effects of the overflow are addressed effectively. This cooperative effort is crucial to prevent further environmental issues arising from such mishaps.
