Beaufort Gears Up for a Festive Thanksgiving Weekend

The charming city of Beaufort is all set to celebrate Thanksgiving with a flurry of activities and some much-needed time off for our local government employees. As the aroma of turkey wafts through kitchens and the streets fill with the buzz of holiday shoppers, let’s take a look at what’s happening around town.

City Offices Closed for the Holiday

Mark your calendars: the City of Beaufort’s offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, in honor of Thanksgiving. If you’ve got any city business on your plate, make sure to wrap it up before the break!

Also taking a holiday break is Capital Waste Services. They won’t be picking up trash on Thanksgiving Day, which means if your regular collection day is Thursday, you’ll see them on Friday instead. And for those who usually get service on Friday, no worries; those collections will take place on Saturday.

Get Outdoors with Junior Ranger Park Explorer Program

On Friday, Nov. 29, 2024, why not shake off that Thanksgiving feast with a delightful outing? The Reconstruction Era National Historical Park is hosting a free Junior Ranger Park Explorer Program at Camp Saxton. Swing by any time between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to meet a park ranger and immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the area.

This program will give you a chance to not only explore beautiful public lands but to also earn a shiny Junior Ranger Park Explorer Badge. Sounds like a fun way to learn about wildlife safety and how to cherish our historic sites!

What’s New with Local Infrastructure?

In important news for commuting locals, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is moving ahead with plans to replace a critical bridge in Jasper County. The U.S. Highway 278 bridge over Beaverdam Creek has been earmarked for replacement due to damage caused by hurricanes earlier this fall. This speedy replacement aims to keep our infrastructure safe and reliable.

Engage with the Community at Indivisible Beaufort

For those looking to get politically active, don’t miss the December meeting of Indivisible Beaufort on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. held at the St. Helena Branch Library. Josh Malkin, Advocacy Director at ACLU-SC, is set to share insights on upcoming legislation for the 2025 South Carolina Legislative Session.

This is a fantastic opportunity for community members to engage on pressing issues, so gather your thoughts and prepare to advocate for the topics that matter to you!

Caring for Our Veterans

This month of November, Beaufort County Veterans Affairs is proudly lighting a green light for Operation Green Light for Veterans. Government buildings across the county will glow green to acknowledge and support our military community. Caroline Fermin, Veterans Affairs Director, encourages everyone to join this initiative by shining green lights from their homes and businesses.

FEMA Hiring in South Carolina

On the employment front, FEMA is actively looking for individuals to join their team and assist with recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene. They have a variety of positions available—from Civil Rights Specialists to Digital Communication Specialists. If you’re interested, check out USAjobs.gov for more information and application details.

Community Engagement with the Assessor’s Office

Beaufort County Assessor Ebony Sanders is hosting community events across various library branches, providing a platform for residents to voice questions about real property. Be sure to check the dates—starting from Dec. 3 at the St. Helena Branch—and take advantage of this opportunity to connect with local officials.

A Heads Up About Construction

Last but not least, expect some temporary lane closures on Laurel Bay Road as construction continues. Folks driving in the area should allow for extra travel time and remain cautious of the traffic control teams on-site.

With the festive spirit just around the corner, Beaufort is buzzing with activities for everyone! Enjoy the break, get involved, and cherish the time with loved ones. Happy Thanksgiving, Beaufort!
