Beaufort, SC: A Heartwarming Thanksgiving Tradition
In the charming town of Beaufort, South Carolina, community spirit shines brighter than a Thanksgiving turkey in the oven! Every year, locals and visitors alike gather for an extraordinary celebration that transcends traditional holiday gatherings. This year, on November 28, 2024, Hemingway’s Bistro and Panini’s on the Waterfront will host the 31st annual “Orphans and Strays Thanksgiving Dinner”—and it’s more than just a meal; it’s a testament to the warmth and generosity that defines this lovely town.
A Tradition That Warms the Heart
Since its inception in 1993 by previous owners of Hemingway’s, this special event has transformed into a beloved local tradition. Now under new ownership, the spirit of giving continues! Paul Thompson, the man behind both Hemingway’s and Panini’s, notes that the free Thanksgiving dinner draws over 150 locals and visitors who may otherwise find themselves without a place to celebrate the holiday. Isn’t that amazing?
Paul has decided to close Panini’s for the day once again, ensuring that his team can spend the day with their loved ones. This year, he is dedicated to cooking up a storm at Hemingway’s, preparing a feast that includes succulent smoked turkeys and hams. “We greatly appreciate our regular patrons who celebrate with us year after year,” he says. “But for this day, our priority is to serve those who might be feeling a bit lost—orphaned on Thanksgiving.”
A Feast for Everyone
The Orphans & Strays Thanksgiving Dinner is a true potluck where volunteers and guests bring side dishes to share with the crowd. But here’s the best part: the main courses, including turkey, ham, mac & cheese, salads, and more, are all donated and prepared by Hemingway’s and Panini’s. It’s a delightful way to experience the sense of community that Beaufort embodies.
Although it’s not mandatory to bring anything, the option to contribute a dish makes it all the more engaging. Plus, guests can enjoy live entertainment throughout the event! And for those needing a little post-dinner relaxation, the full bar will remain open until 1:30 AM. What a fun way to continue the celebration!
Giving Back with Gratitude
As if that wasn’t enough to warm your heart, local musician Campfire Tyler will be performing at the event, sacrificing his time with family to spread joy and music. “Tyler is an incredible person who always finds ways to give back,” Paul adds. “Hopefully, we can enjoy some outdoor entertainment if the weather cooperates!”
More than Just a Dinner
For many, Thanksgiving is a chance to indulge in delicious food and embrace the couch for a football marathon. But here in Beaufort, it’s also a time to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday: practicing humility and being grateful for our blessings. Paul emphasizes that the event has become a highlight for many, and it’s no wonder—creating a space where everyone feels included is a beautiful thing, especially during the holidays.
As excitement builds for this year’s meal, it’s worth noting that the community won’t just stop there. Plans are already underway to host another gathering on Christmas Day, echoing the motto that everyone is welcome. The doors at Hemingway’s Bistro and Panini’s are thrown wide open, and the invitation extends to all.
