Community Meeting To Address Stormwater Concerns in Burton, SC

County Council Member Gerald Dawson (District 1) announced on July 10th that he would be hosting a community meeting for the citizens of Burton, South Carolina to discuss and address their stormwater issues and concerns. This meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, at the Burton Wells Regional Recreation Center.

The meeting will feature David Wilhelm, the Director of Beaufort County Public Works and Stormwater Department, who will provide updates on current stormwater issues and answer questions from the community members. Laurel Bay Road Construction Notice

IPW Construction Group is continuing to work on ongoing shoulder and temporary lane closures along the entire stretch of Laurel Bay Road in Beaufort till the end of the year. These closures will be in effect between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Residents and travelers are urged to prepare for minor traffic delays during this time.

Furthermore, the ramp coming off U.S. 21 onto Laurel Bay Road is now permanently closed. Commuters are asked to be mindful of the traffic control team as well as the construction crews working in the area to help them carry out their duties efficiently and safely.


Free Summer Tax Prep for Lowcountry Citizens

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program announced a free summer tax preparation initiative for qualifying residents of Beaufort and Jasper counties who missed the traditional tax filing deadline. The program, which is a collaboration between the IRS, Beaufort County Human Services Alliance, and United Way of the Lowcountry (UWLC), aims to assist low-income individuals and families, non-English speaking taxpayers, persons with disabilities, and seniors (60 years and above).

“We understand that filing taxes can be overwhelming, especially for those who have limited resources,” commented Sherry Halphen, United Way Volunteer and VITA Program Coordinator. “Our summer tax preparation program allows residents to receive free help from IRS-certified volunteers, ensuring they receive every deduction and credit they deserve.”


How to Participate in the Free Tax Preparation Assistance

The tax preparation services offered by IRS-certified VITA volunteers will be available between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Thursdays, July 25, August 22, and September 26. The location for these services is the United Way of the Lowcountry Bluffton Office (10 Buckingham Plantation Drive, Suite D, Bluffton, S.C. 29910).
