Tornado Watch Lifted in South Carolina Amid Calming Weather

News Summary

The National Weather Service has cancelled the tornado watch for several counties in South Carolina, including Charleston, as severe weather threats have subsided. Local residents can now resume their usual activities without concern for severe weather conditions. However, other parts of the country, particularly Texas and Mississippi, faced significant storms with tragic impacts. As a fog advisory is now in effect for Southeast South Carolina, drivers are urged to exercise caution due to limited visibility.

Tornado Watch Cancelled in South Carolina as Severe Weather Threat Subsides

Charleston, South Carolina – The sky has cleared and the stormy threat has subsided as local authorities announced the cancellation of the tornado watch that had been in effect for most counties in the area. So, if you were on the edge of your seat watching the weather, you can finally breathe a sigh of relief!

The National Weather Service (NWS) had initially issued the tornado watch for several counties, including Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Colleton, Beaufort, Orangeburg, Hampton, Jasper, and Allendale. Fortunately, by 12:30 p.m. on the same day, live updates confirmed that the severe weather conditions that had been causing quite a stir for the Lowcountry had fizzled out, triggering the cancellation of the watch which was originally in place until 1 p.m.

Along with the cancellation of the tornado watch, the First Alert Weather Day that was designated for the rest of Sunday was also called off. This means you can go about your plans without the threat of severe weather looming over you! However, let’s take a moment to remember the severe conditions that affected other parts of the country over the weekend.

The same cold front that dulled our forecast here led to serious thunderstorms and damaging tornadoes across Texas and Mississippi on Saturday. The affects were tragically felt as they resulted in two deaths, alongside multiple injuries. In Texas, one person lost their life in the Liverpool area, south of Houston, while four injuries were reported, although thankfully, none were critical. At least ten homes reported damage as officials deployed to assess the area. The NWS was set to conduct damage surveys for at least five tornadoes that struck areas adjacent to Houston.

Meanwhile, in Mississippi, another life was lost in Adams County, alongside injuries reported in Franklin County. It appears that at least two tornadoes touched down near Bude and Brandon, resulting in multiple roofs being damaged across several buildings.

As for our friends in Alabama, there were also reports of storm impacts due to both tornadoes and gusty winds throughout northern regions of the state. It’s a stark reminder that while the Lowcountry is currently enjoying calm weather, other locations are facing significant challenges.

Back on the home front, the weather in Southeast South Carolina has brought about a dense fog advisory. Well, if you’re planning to head out, it’s good to be aware that visibility will be quite limited! Expect conditions that could drop visibility down to 1/4 mile or less, specifically in low-lying areas or near bodies of water until about 3:30 a.m.

Here are some key safety tips if you need to drive in foggy conditions: always reduce your speed, avoid using your high beams, and make sure to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Safety should always come first, especially in challenging weather like this!

Before the cold front moved through, the Lowcountry was experiencing overcast skies with mild temperatures ranging from the upper 50s to low 60s. Then came the wind gusts and short downpours that reminded everyone just how quickly the weather can change. Isn’t it incredible how nature keeps us guessing?

As we wrap this up, let’s keep those affected by the severe weather in Texas and Mississippi in our thoughts, and give ourselves a big pat on the back for being prepared here in South Carolina. It’s never too early to pack an umbrella though, right?
