A recent report from The Leapfrog Group, a well-respected national nonprofit that has been shining a light on hospital safety for over twenty years, has revealed that many hospitals in our state are among the safest in the nation. In fact, South Carolina has earned the impressive title of having the 10th safest hospitals in the U.S.!

Understanding the Grades

So, how exactly do these hospitals get graded? The Leapfrog Group assigns letter grades from A to F based on hospitals’ ability to prevent medical errors, accidents, injuries, and infections that can cause harm to patients. With around thirty different measures taken into account, these scores are generated using data from publicly available sources, including patient feedback collected through national surveys after hospital visits. It’s all about keeping our loved ones safe!

A Closer Look at the Rankings

Out of a total of 52 hospitals in South Carolina that were analyzed, a fantastic 40.4% earned an A grade, showcasing their commitment to safety and quality care. That means many facilities are providing excellent services, and patients can feel confident about their care.

However, it’s essential to note that not all hospitals received glowing reviews. While no South Carolina hospital received a failing grade (thank goodness!), there are some that didn’t quite make the mark. Fifteen hospitals received a C grade, indicating there’s definitely room for improvement, and two hospitals, Piedmont Medical Center and Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital, received a less-than-stellar D grade.
