Election in Southern Beaufort County Heats Up: Davis vs. Saunders
As the vibrant coastal community of Hilton Head prepares for the upcoming state Senate election, two candidates are raising the stakes in what is shaping up to be a pivotal race for the future of the area. Incumbent Republican Tom Davis, an experienced attorney and policy maker, and Democrat Gwyneth Saunders, a retired Navy veteran with a background in journalism, are vying for the Senate seat representing Senate District 46, which covers much of southern Beaufort County including Bluffton and Sun City.
Big Issues at Stake
One of the most significant topics distinguishing these two candidates is their stance on abortion access. With recent legislation tightening restrictions on abortion in South Carolina, Saunders has emphasized her commitment to reproductive freedom, vowing to “fight tirelessly for women’s freedoms.” She criticizes Davis and his Republican colleagues for supporting some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, particularly the recent ban on most abortions after just six weeks of pregnancy.
This new landscape was reshaped on June 24, 2022, when the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson allowed states to set their own abortion laws. In May 2023, Governor Henry McMaster signed a bill enforcing this six-week restriction, which was not well received by many residents. Davis, who voted for this legislation, defends his stance by stating he had to make a tough choice between an existing law that allowed abortions through the second trimester and the six-week rule. He believes his approach aligns with a significant portion of South Carolinians who see value in protecting both the mother’s and the child’s rights.
Does Experience Matter?
Tom Davis, 64, is no stranger to Beaufort County politics. With years of service under his belt, having worked as a senior policy advisor and chief of staff for former Governor Mark Sanford, he’s seeking a fifth term in the Senate. He boasts extensive connections and appears confident about his influence in securing funds for vital community needs like roads, education, and infrastructure. “We have tremendous needs down here, and we have more seniority and clout than we’ve ever had in Beaufort County,” he stated.
On the other hand, Gwyneth Saunders, 72, argues that her own experience as a Navy veteran and journalist gives her a comprehensive perspective on the issues facing the community. Living in Sun City, she has previously held the position of commander of the Sun City Veterans Association and believes strongly that quality education and capable leadership are essential for progress. “I have the experience and the capability to do it,” she asserted, displaying a sense of determination in her campaign.
Education and Environment
The two candidates also differ sharply on issues concerning public education and climate change. Saunders is outspoken against the current school voucher system, emphasizing that public funding should improve public schools rather than diverting taxpayer dollars to private institutions. “We need to stop banning books,” she added, pushing for better pay for teachers and adequate facilities.
Climate change is another topic that has received attention from both candidates. Saunders insists it is crucial to take proactive measures to protect the region’s coastlines and ecosystems, highlighting how the tourist economy relies on a stable environment. In contrast, Davis believes addressing the state’s rapid growth and overdevelopment is paramount to preserving Beaufort County’s beauty and resources.
Campaign Finances and Support
When it comes to funding, Davis has a significant advantage, having raised over half a million dollars for his campaign, while Saunders has garnered considerably less financial support. Despite this, both candidates are committed to making their voices heard, with Saunders stressing that she has “as good a chance as anybody else” in this race.
With so many critical issues at stake, the race for Senate District 46 has become a focal point in Southern Beaufort County. As voters prepare to head to the polls, questions of reproductive rights, education, environmental impact, and the overall direction of the community will shape the conversation in the days leading up to the election.
Stay tuned as we continue to follow this vibrant political race that promises to not only impact the lives of voters today but lay the groundwork for future generations in this beautiful coastal region.
