Beaufort High School young novelist Rebecca Thompson, winner of the Ann Head Literary Prize, will be the spotlight of this month’s Open Mic Night, hosted at the Pat Conroy Literary Center. The event, which welcomes public participation, is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 11, at the Conroy Center at 601 Bladen Street.
Thompson, the author of the popular duology — “The Girl of the Tree” and “Seeking the Truth,” began her writing journey during the trying times of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the challenges, she was committed to publishing her first book. The Lowcountry, South Carolina resident not only managed to self-publish a novel as a teenage author but went ahead to write another one. She currently lives with her family, including two cats and a fish.
In addition to Thompson’s featured reading, the Open Mic Night will also include a series of short readings, each lasting between 3 to 5 minutes, by various other talented writers across diverse genres. This free event not only showcases promising authors but also aims to build a community of writers and appreciation for the art and talent of both new and established writers.
Aspiring writers interested in participating in the Open Mic Night have been asked to notify the Conroy Center via email. The center’s initiative is an excellent opportunity for individuals to share their literary work and gain exposure in a supportive and creative community.
In related news, Beaufort’s Cultural Arts District has been granted a five-year recertification, further spotlighting the area’s vibrant arts scene and commitment to fostering cultural expression.
Meanwhile, true crime enthusiasts can look forward to a unique upcoming event as authors of a new book that delves into why some people engulf their lives in true crime, will be coming to town soon.
In addition, tickets for the USCB Center for the Arts’ 2024-25 performing arts season are now on sale, promising an exciting line-up of events for all theatre lovers in the area.
An art exhibit titled ‘Timeless Treasures’ is on display at the Beaufort Art Association Gallery. The exhibit, a selection of works from the Camp Conroy collection, will be open to the public through July 14.
