Beaufort local golfers demonstrated great skill and perseverance at the Legends Tournament held at Parris Island, winning in various divisions. Among the victors was Andrew Hollingsworth who continued his exceptional performance this summer, winning the Boys 7-9 division with a 1-under-par round.
Seabrook’s Barnes Gooding was another local hero, winning the Boys 15-18 title with a +7 score, outclassing second-place winner Gus Christian by two shots. In the female category, Lauren Holcombe battled her way to the top in the Girls 13-18 section, winning in a playoff against Kenadie Cole.
Other division winners include Ryan George from Bluffton, who won the Boys 13-14 title with a phenomenal -2 score. In a gripping playoff, JJ Johnson Jr., a fellow Bluffton golfer, overcame Mt. Pleasant’s Jack Semararo to win the Boys 10-12 division.
Another notable feat came from Mac McGirt of Bluffton who finished third in the SCJGA’s 12-and-under Junior Championship at Cat Island Golf Club, shooting a commendable 5-over-par. Fellow Bluffton player JJ Johnson Jr. tied for fourth place with an 8 over.
The championship, however, was won by Anderson’s Wilson Cauley who scored a remarkable 2-under over 36 holes, beating out Greenville’s Wilson Brasington by five shots.
The victories emerging from Beaufort and nearby regions showcase the emerging golf talent in this region, putting the area in the forefront of South Carolina’s sports landscape. The ability of these young talents to perform under pressure, and their capability to compete against experienced golfers is a testament to not only their hard work and determination but also interestingly indicates the growing stature of golf in the community.
