Mark your calendars, as January 20, 2025 promises to be a day filled with reflection, unity, and joy in Beaufort County, South Carolina. This year, the community will come together for a series of exciting events to honor the legendary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His legacy will be celebrated through marches, parades, and community service projects showcasing the spirit of justice and equality.
The day begins bright and early with the Beaufort MLK Parade kicking off at 10:00 a.m.. Starting from the Beaufort National Cemetery, the parade will make its way through the town along a vibrant route, including Adventure Street, Boundary, Carteret, Bay, and Bladen streets. Hawkers, families, and community members alike are encouraged to come out and join in the festivities, celebrating Dr. King’s message of hope and brotherhood.
Meanwhile, at Hilton Head Island, the Hilton Head MLK Committee for Justice will be hosting its own annual memorial march. This march forms part of the day’s activities aimed at fostering community solidarity and remembrance.
Over in Bluffton, the Bluffton MLK Observance Committee is gearing up for its annual march starting at 2:00 p.m. from the May River Theater. Participants will stroll through the picturesque streets of Old Town Bluffton, eventually wrapping up at the charming Oyster Factory Park. To further contribute to the day’s spirit of giving, attendees are encouraged to bring supplies for “Backpack Buddies,” a local initiative designed to provide meals for children in need.
Prior to the main event day, the community has plenty to keep busy with! On January 18, volunteers will come together for community service projects, including the cleanup of historical Gullah cemeteries—a beautiful way to honor both heritage and community. In addition, an Old Time Gospel Camp Meeting will take place at Campbell Chapel A.M.E Church that same day at 3 p.m., inviting everyone to come together in song and spirit.
Get crafty on January 19 with a poster-making event for the MLK Parade from 6-8 p.m., held at 39 Persimmon Street, Suite 201. It’s a great opportunity to create vibrant messages that align with Dr. King’s vision.
As a reminder for locals, Beaufort City and Beaufort County offices will be closed on January 20 in observance of the holiday, while emergency services will remain operational. The Beaufort County Convenience Center will also be closed, with regular hours resuming the following day. Most banks, mail centers, and administrative offices will take a break, but don’t fret! Many grocery stores, chain restaurants, and retail stores will stay open to cater to your needs.
The day’s celebrations will conclude at Oyster Factory Park with a community meal following the Bluffton March, allowing everyone to bond over good food and fellowship. And mark your calendars for the fun-filled Dine & Dance Sneaker Ball, set for January 25 at the Port Royal Beach House—don’t forget those sneakers!
