Here in Beaufort, a solid military town, we hold the highest honor for the men and women positioned here. They’re our protectors, our heroes, who relentlessly train to stand in the path of danger when the need arises. The appreciation for their service reverberates through our city’s pulse. The bakers at the corner bakery or the old barber who’s been in service longer than most of us remember, show their gratitude by offering discounts to our soldiers. Although these acts may seem small, they come from a place of utmost respect and sincerity. Beaufort is authentically military in spirit and deed.
However, there’s a baffling mystery that offers no answers. Why would anyone linked with the military, either past or present, support a presidential candidate who not only sidestepped his draft due to “bone spurs” but also blatantly disrespects those who willingly serve our nation? The said candidate, Donald Trump, didn’t stop at avoiding service; he even sneered at war veterans and heroes with utter disregard.
The debate concerning the legitimacy of his medical condition is endless, with vocal opinions on both sides. However, what creates ripples of shock is his open contempt for serving personnel. Trump’s careless remark about John McCain, the war hero, is a chilling testament to his attitude: “He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” Such a statement from an aspiring president sends shivers of discomfort down the spine.
However, it doesn’t end here. The utter disrespect continues even after McCain’s death, with Trump stating, “I was never a fan of John McCain and I never will be.”
Even recently, Mr. Trump didn’t hesitate to exploit a military cemetery for political purposes. Despite the prohibition of political campaign activities in Army National Military Cemeteries, his campaign released a video of his visit to Arlington National Cemetery. This showed a blatant disregard for policy and disrespect for the sanctity of the resting place of our fallen heroes. This stunt has caused a wave of outrage, and a formal report has been filed regarding this incident.
Every rational person must question why such a man, who consistently insults the military, attempts to leverage a military setting for political benefits. Trump has consistently displayed an astonishing level of insensitivity and immorality. What’s the reason behind such exaggerated show of support now? It’s nothing more than an exploitative attempt to score political points. These ‘stunts’ underlie a grim reality, exploiting the sacrifices of our fallen soldiers for personal gain.
We owe it to the men and women in uniform to continue to express our full-hearted loyalty and respect. A small town teacher from Beaufort, I take serious offense whenever the military is criticized, much less demeaned, while selfishly aiming for the position of the Commander-in-Chief. It’s time we demand sincerity from our leaders, not empty words and thoughtless actions.
