Gov. McMaster Celebrates Robert Smalls with Monument Bill Signature

Good news, everybody! On the warm afternoon of Thursday, right at 2:30 p.m., our hardworking Governor Henry McMaster was right there on the first floor of our South Carolina State House for a special event. The room was buzzing with the electric charge usually reserved for important momentous occasions as the Governor put pen to paper and signed what is known as H. 5042, but most are referring to it as the Robert Smalls Monument Bill.

Who is Robert Smalls, you ask?

Oh boy, wait until you hear this story! Born in the beautiful city of Beaufort back in 1839, Robert Smalls was initially enslaved. But, during the turbulent times of the Civil War, his life took a twist. Our man became a hero by seizing control of a Confederate ship, the Planter. His audacious action was just the beginning. He sailed the ship and flipped it to the United States Navy, securing his freedom. Can you believe that?

Seems like a fascinating story for a Hollywood blockbuster, doesn’t it? Well, it doesn’t end there. Smalls traded his daring life on the sea for a career in politics, becoming a state lawmaker and making his way to the big leagues – Congress in Washington.

Historical Mark in the Making

Now, thanks to the bill signed by Gov. McMaster, Robert Smalls is getting his own monument on the SC State House Grounds. A well-deserved honor, wouldn’t you say? The move is part of the ongoing efforts to remember Smalls and his pivotal role in our beautiful state’s history.

Imagine walking around the grounds with a cup of coffee in hand, standing in front of the monument, and being reminded of this awesome tale of bravery, resilience and ambition.

The monument is also a beautiful sign of progression towards recognizing and celebrating the contributions of figures that might have been forgotten or overlooked in our history books. And, for future generations, this monument will serve as a real-life reminder of our rich heritage and the sacrifices made by heroes like Robert Smalls.

Stay Tuned for More

And there you have it folks! Gov. McMaster has officially signed the Robert Smalls Monument Bill as of this Thursday. While we don’t have a timeline yet for when the monument will be installed, we can be sure it is on its way. So keep your eyes open and stay tuned for more updates on this exciting news.

This is a milestone moment for all of us, keeping the essence of our history alive, as we look forward and continue to share and remember the stories of those who’ve shaped our past.
