Snow-covered roads and closed school signs in the Lowcountry

News Summary

A severe winter storm has impacted the Lowcountry, leading to numerous closures, including schools and government offices. Beaufort County canceled all activities for January 24, while Jasper County opted for eLearning. Road and airport conditions are treacherous, and residents are advised to stay safe as temperatures plummet. Local officials and communities are coming together to support each other during these challenging times.

Winter Weather Causes Closures and Cancellations Across Lowcountry

A harsh winter has brought significant impacts to the Lowcountry, causing various closures and cancellations, particularly affecting schools and local government offices. Residents are advised to stay safe and warm as the region grapples with heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures.

Beaufort County School District Takes Action

In a proactive measure, the Beaufort County School District has officially canceled all school activities for Friday, January 24, 2025. This means no in-person classes or eLearning for students, and all district buildings will be closed for the day. The effects of the winter weather have also led to the abrupt cancellation of all extracurricular and athletic activities scheduled through Sunday, January 26, 2025.

Looking ahead, unless further announcements are made, schools in the district are expected to resume normal operations on Monday, January 27, 2025. However, the joint Board of Education/SIC meeting in Beaufort County has been postponed, with a new date set to be announced in February.

A more challenging issue arises as the school district has already exhausted its eLearning days from prior storms this year. Instead, the district will utilize a planned weather day on March 17, 2025, to accommodate possible disruptions.

Jasper County School District Adopts Different Approach

On the other hand, the Jasper County School District has declared an eLearning day on Friday, January 24, 2025. Staff members will be working remotely, but a decision regarding the operation of schools on Monday, January 27, 2025, will be made over the weekend.

In this district, all evening athletic activities are set to be rescheduled for a future date, allowing students to focus on safety during this severe winter weather.

Road and Airport Conditions

As snow plows wrap up their work on I-95, crews are shifting their focus to clearing major highways in both Beaufort and Jasper counties. Officials are advising everyone to stay off the roads if possible due to the treacherous conditions created by black ice. Roadway safety in the Hilton Head Island area has deteriorated, affecting primary, secondary, and even back roads, along with bridges and overpasses.

There’s been a significant impact on travel as well. Both the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport and Hilton Head Island Airport are closed due to snow and hazardous weather conditions, which has resulted in a halt to all inbound and outbound flights.

Local Government Responses and Community Support

In response to the weather, various local government offices are closed. Town Hall in Hilton Head and the offices of the Town of Bluffton have shut their doors, although online services remain operational to assist residents. The City of Beaufort’s offices are also closed, with plans to reassess Friday operations by late morning on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

Residents are encouraged to check on their neighbors, especially those who may be vulnerable during these frigid conditions. Local officials are stressing the importance of avoiding unnecessary travel during this time, prioritizing safety over travel plans.

For those needing supplies, grocery stores have adjusted their hours, with some opening late. Many restaurants in the area have closed up shop for now, with a promise to reopen once the weather stabilizes.

Staying Warm and Safe

The National Weather Service reports temperatures dropping into the low teens, remaining below freezing through late morning, a reminder that staying indoors is the best bet for safety during these trying conditions. With hazardous roadways and airport closures, the Lowcountry is bracing for what this winter storm has to offer.

As the community pulls together during this chilly season, maintaining warmth and safety is the priority for all.
