Exciting Leadership Changes at Second Helpings in Beaufort
BEAUFORT – Big things are happening at Second Helpings, the nonprofit food rescue agency dedicated to combating hunger in the Lowcountry’s Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton counties. Recently, the organization announced some key leadership changes that promise to enhance its mission of food rescue and hunger relief in a community where nearly 30,000 residents struggle with food insecurity.
A New Executive Director at the Helm
First up, we have Amy Colin, who has been named the new Executive Director of Second Helpings. Colin comes with a wealth of experience, especially from her time at the Girl Scouts organization, where she excelled in various leadership roles. From developing strategic membership plans to boosting program effectiveness, Colin is well-prepped to tackle the challenges ahead. According to Mary Ann Bell, the president of the board of directors, Colin’s dynamic leadership is exactly what the organization needs to further engage the community in their ongoing fight against hunger and food waste.
“I am very pleased to welcome Amy to Second Helpings,” Bell said enthusiastically. “Her background will greatly assist us in expanding our outreach.” Colin herself is equally excited about the role. “Second Helpings plays a vital role in our community,” she stated. “I look forward to collaborating with our partners and supporters to tackle hunger and reduce food waste.”
Meet Marcus Tanner: The New Director of Operations
Moving on from the top spot, we have Marcus Tanner, who has transitioned into the newly created role of Director of Operations. This role is vital and comes with a grant funded by the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry. Tanner, who previously served as the Executive Director, will now focus on all aspects of food rescue while managing the organization’s fleet of trucks.
“Last year, Second Helpings rescued and distributed more food than ever before,” Bell explained. “Having a leader like Marcus, with his extensive experience and passion, will certainly enhance our operations.” Tanner, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, has been instrumental in implementing a data-driven approach to food distribution, ensuring that food donations reach the partners who need them the most.
Impressive Achievements and Future Goals
Thanks to Tanner’s leadership, Second Helpings has added eight new agency partners in underserved geographies in both Beaufort and Hampton counties since he joined in 2022. This expansion allows the organization to enhance its reach and cater to even more individuals facing food insecurity. With nearly a 60% increase in food rescued last year compared to previous years, it’s clear that Second Helpings is on the right track!
With these new leadership roles filled, the organization is gearing up for an even stronger impact in the community. Their future goals include more sustainable practices for food rescue and further community engagement, hoping to build a network that effectively tackles hunger and reduces food waste in a meaningful way.
