Jasper County Detention Center Undergoes Upgrades Amid Ongoing Escapee Search

A Prisoner Remains at Large

The Jasper County Detention Center, grappling with a recent prisoner escape, has begun substantial upgrades of its facility. Prisoner Jaquan Duvall Barnes, 28, who fled the detention center on June 10, remains at large, Jasper County Detention Center Director Arthur Benjamin confirmed on July 2. Barnes, previously arrested on multiple charges, including sex trafficking of a minor, is currently being sought by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Fugitive Task Force.

Barnes’s Arrest and Escape

The Hardeeville Police Department and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office VICE Unit apprehended Barnes after receiving a tip about a suspected sex trafficker from Georgia. A missing juvenile female from Beaufort County, acquainted with Barnes, was located at the time of his capture. Now, authorities are urgently appealing to the public for any information on the whereabouts of the fugitive, whose conviction history includes a 2015 offense for third degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

Detention Center Upgrades

Following the escape, officials have taken decisive measures to fortify the detention center located at 12008 North Jacob Smart Boulevard in Ridgeland. A complete assessment of the current security system was carried out, and considerable upgrades are underway. Prior to the breakout, the center had begun replacing inmate toilets and showers. Recent efforts include upgrading the complete prison fence, renovating the intercom system, and enhancing video surveillance.

Crisis of Staff Shortage

Benjamin also highlighted a persisting challenge for the center – staff shortage. With the pressing need for additional manpower, the center is actively seeking assistance from neighboring counties for temporary housing and is looking to bolster its own workforce by recruiting more employees. He underscores the importance of collective efforts, claiming,”We reach out and help each other.”

Public Urged to Alert Authorities

Due to Barnes’s history of sex trafficking, the public is asked to immediately notify police if he is spotted. Citizens can dial 911 or can directly get in touch with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office dispatch at (843)726-7519.
