Shelters in Ridgeland & Beaufort County Close

In an update made on Tuesday evening, Jasper County Emergency Service confirmed the closure of the storm shelter in Ridgeland, which had served as a refuge during the passing of Tropical Storm Debby. The Ridgeland Secondary Academy of Excellence’s gymnasium, manned by the American Red Cross and Department of Social Services, was offered as a safe spot for those requiring shelter.

According to Richard Hughes, Public Information Officer of Jasper County Fire Rescue, the move was prompted by enhanced weather conditions. Typical to post-storm conditions, pockets of water logged roads were spotted, but the situation seemed to be largely improving. “Only a few residents used the shelter facility – five people and a dog” added Hughes.

The authorities in Beaufort County too mandated the closing of two disaster relief shelters stationed at Bluffton and Burton. Public announcements concerning additional shelter facilities will be posted to the South Carolina Emergency Management Division’s website or the toll-free hotline, as and when required.

Updates on Road Conditions & Closures

On the roads front, the Jasper County Emergency Service released updated snaps about the closures and travel conditions. Echoing the SCDOT official, a representative advised against driving through standing or still-moving water, urging all to exercise caution. Citizens are encouraged to report issues on state-maintained roadways through the SCDOT Customer Service line.

Operational Adjustments in Response to Tropical Storm Debby

As a preventative measure, Jasper County announced administrative office closures, advising citizens to avoid driving through water-logged areas. The Ridgeland Post Office also remained closed due to reported roof damage. Legacy Christian Academy’s scheduled orientation on Aug. 8 had to be called off given the road conditions. School information will be provided on Facebook and an open house is anticipated to be held on the first day of school, Aug. 12.

BJWSA Alerts about Possible Contamination from Flood Waters

Cautionary advisories were released by Beaufort Jasper Water and Sewer Authority warning residents to stay clear of flood waters that could potentially contain unseen hazards. Post storm assessment reports by the BJWSA crew highlighted several areas with submerged sanitary sewer infrastructure.

“Given the severity of the flood, the stormwater needs to be considered as contaminated,” warned the BJWSA representative. The affected areas are likely to be cleared up as the waters recede. The authorities are on high alert and monitoring the situation closely, working in solidarity with the S.C. Department of Environmental Services to counteract any damage caused by the contamination.
