Beaufort Police Department is stepping in to make sure parents are mindful of internet safety this back-to-school season.
The cops aren’t there to ruin the fun of posting adorable first day of school pictures, but they want to make sure everyone is aware of the risks involved.
Your kid looks so cute in their new uniform, and we get it, you want to show them off. But, according to our local friends in blue, those seemingly harmless snapshots could be a bonanza for folks with not-so-good intentions.
Well, by posting your kid’s first-day look replete with their school’s info, their teacher’s name or even their grades, you’re potentially offering a bunch of personal details to people you don’t want to have them. This includes where your kids are and when, or even specific features like their height and weight. Creepy, right?
Besides, these details could also be used to gain your child’s trust. A stranger could pose to be a friend of the family just by using all that information you’ve been posting. Not ideal, huh?
The Beaufort cops suggest being more cautious with the information you share. Avoid posting your child’s school name, age, teacher’s name, grade, or any identifying features. It’s all about keeping those delightful kiddos safe.
This useful advice isn’t meant to put a damper on the excitement that back-to-school season brings. It’s just here to help everyone stay safe on this wild web we’re all navigating together. So, keep the sweet snapshots coming, just be wary of what information you’re giving away with those posts. And remember, stay safe out there, Beaufort!
