News Summary
Hurricane Helene is on track to impact Florida’s Big Bend region by late Thursday, prompting a tropical storm watch for the Lowcountry. Residents are anticipating hurricane-driven winds, storm surge, and heavy rainfall, with predictions of power outages and localized flooding. As the storm strengthens, caution is advised for beachgoers and those in affected areas. Cleanup efforts are already underway despite the challenges posed by the storm’s aftermath.
Hurricane Helene Approaches: Tropical Storm Watch for the Lowcountry
The Lowcountry is gearing up for some potential excitement as Hurricane Helene makes its way towards Florida’s Big Bend region, expected to arrive late Thursday. As if that weren’t enough to get your attention, a tropical storm watch has officially been issued for our own backyard, including the charming towns of Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head Island.
What to Expect
Residents are urged to stay alert as the storm carries with it hurricane-driven winds that could clock in between 39 and 57 mph. These winds are no joke—they can down trees and cause isolated power outages. If you’ve got trees in your yard, it might be a good idea to check if they’re securely rooted!
Starting Wednesday, a storm surge of about 1 to 3 feet above ground is expected, with the greatest impacts hitting on Thursday. This surge could lead to localized flooding and even some beach erosion, so beach-goers might want to think twice before heading out.
Rainfall Predictions and Flood Risks
As if the winds and surge weren’t enough, Beaufort County is looking at a good chance of getting drenched with up to 3 inches of rain between 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8 p.m. Friday. Those afternoon beach outings might just turn into cozy indoor movie marathons. Plus, there’s an increased risk of high surf and dangerous rip currents, so if you’re planning a beach trip, tread carefully!
Seas and Tornado Risks
The seas are expected to get pretty wild, building up to anywhere from 6 to 15 feet. This kind of wave action can lead to some serious beach conditions, so it’s best to steer clear of the water during this time. On top of that, residents should be wary of winds and gusts that could hit up to 55 knots. These high winds could also spawn some isolated tornadoes as Helene’s rain bands make their way through.
Up-to-Date Tracking
As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, Helene was located about 500 miles south-southwest of Tampa, Florida, and was moving in a north-northwest direction at 10 mph with winds reaching 80 mph. As it barrels towards the eastern Gulf of Mexico, there’s a good chance it will strengthen quickly into a major hurricane.
While Helene is certainly making waves, it’s worth noting that the ripples of its impact stretch far beyond its predicted path. The National Weather Service has already issued a total of 63 tornado warnings as Helene swept through the area, and Beaufort County witnessed three confirmed tornadoes rated EF0.
Power Outages and Community Action
As the storm raged on, power outages affected over 675,000 customers across the state, with around 3,000 still without power in Beaufort County. Residents should take precautions and secure potable water, especially since many rely on wells that require electricity. With power outages affecting two-thirds of the pump stations operated by the Beaufort Jasper Water and Sewer Authority, residents may face challenges with water services.
Cleanup efforts are underway, especially with clear skies following the storm. The town of Bluffton is stepping up, offering cost-free permits for storm recovery to its residents. A section of the Henry Robinson Boardwalk in Port Royal suffered significant damage, but local authorities are hustling to get everything back in working order.
A Gentle Reminder
Though the storm sadly claimed 29 lives across South Carolina, it’s worth noting that Beaufort County reported no storm-related deaths or injuries. As the community comes together in this recovery effort, there’s a renewed commitment to preparedness for future weather events.
Stay safe, Lowcountry! With some thoughtful planning and precautions, we can all weather this storm together.
