Tragic House Fire Claims Two Lives in Jasper County
Gillisonville, South Carolina – In a heartbreaking turn of events, a house fire that broke out on December 6 has left the community in mourning after two people lost their lives in the tragic incident. The victims have been identified as Bernard Garvin, aged 69, and Valerie Owens, aged 70. According to Coroner Willie Aiken, the two were the only occupants in the home at the time of the fire.

The ill-fated home was situated in the 12,000 block of Gillison Branch Road. The call for help came to dispatch around 9:54 PM, prompting a swift response from local fire and emergency services. Jasper County Fire Chief Russell Wells shared that they had a “significant response” to the call, involving units from various regions such as Firetower Road, Robertville, and Grays. Additionally, Medic units and duty battalion chiefs joined the effort, with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office stepping in to assist with traffic control and investigation support.

The fire remains under investigation, but Chief Wells noted that a kerosene heater was in the vicinity where the fire is suspected to have originated, particularly near the bedrooms of the home. “We believe the area of origin is near the bedrooms of the home,” he explained. They encourage everyone to follow manufacturer guidelines when using supplemental heating sources, especially during these cold weather months.

Katherine Condie, aged 66, lost her life in that fire while house sitting for her son. Reports indicate that she was visiting from North Carolina when the tragedy struck. Beaufort County Deputy Coroner Andrew McNece confirmed the details regarding her untimely passing.
