Hilton Head Prep triumphed at the John Drafts Battery Creek Classic, overcoming a fierce challenge from teams like Fort Dorchester and Brookland-Cayce. Ty Harpring was named MVP, delivering outstanding performance throughout the tournament. What a thrilling weekend it was for basketball fans on Hilton Head Island! The John Drafts Battery Creek Classic brought together some of the best high school teams in the region, and while the host team, Battery Creek, fell short of the glory, it was Hilton Head Prep that emerged as the big winners!
Hilton Head Prep’s journey to the championship was not an easy one. They faced a fierce challenge right off the bat, going into overtime in their first game against Fort Dorchester. The team dug deep and came out on top with a nail-biting score of 50-43 after the extra period. This hard-fought victory set the tone for what was to come.
The Prep team didn’t stop there. They continued to showcase their skills in their next match as they defeated Brookland-Cayce with a score of 58-51. The intense competition had everyone on the edge of their seats, but it was clear Hilton Head Prep was focused and determined.
The star of the tournament was undoubtedly Ty Harpring. He was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) after putting up some impressive numbers. Throughout the tournament, Harpring averaged a whopping 25 points, 7.3 rebounds, two assists, and two steals per game. His shooting was on fire, hitting 23-of-57 from the floor and an impressive 13-of-27 from beyond the arc.
In that invigorating overtime opener against Fort Dorchester, Harpring scored 25 points, including five three-pointers that electrified the crowd. His next game against Brookland-Cayce saw him elevate his game even further, where he exploded for 35 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Although he was held to 15 points in the championship game against May River, his contributions remained vital as Hilton Head Prep clinched the title with a 44-38 victory. Each game showcased not just Harpring’s talent, but also the grit and teamwork that characterize his team.
Now, let’s talk about host team Battery Creek. Their tournament started off with a bang as they trounced Beaufort Academy 82-35. However, the excitement didn’t last. Facing May River and Brookland-Cayce afterward, they couldn’t balance the scales, leading to unfortunate losses.
Adding to their challenges, Battery Creek was missing their leading scorer, Ethan Cox, due to an injury. Cox previously averaged 14.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.6 steals, and his absence was surely felt on the court.
Despite not winning it all this time around, Battery Creek is gearing up for their next tournament—the Bobcat Classic at Bluffton. They’ll get a chance to face May River again, so the stakes continue to rise for these determined young athletes.
