Hilton Head Island Residents Debate Council Member’s Video Promoting Diversity Initiatives

Hilton Head Island Residents React to Council Member’s Video on Diversity Initiatives

Recently, a local resident of Hilton Head Island stirred up quite a conversation by sharing an old video clip featuring town council member Alex Brown. The 30-second snippet, which appears to be over two years old, was uploaded onto the neighborhood platform Nextdoor and shows Brown discussing the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts, particularly in reference to practices observed in Myrtle Beach.

The Video and Its Context

Although the clip was initially posted on September 11, 2024, it has gained traction due to its edited title that boldly states, “Alex Brown wants HHI to be like Myrtle Beach.” The video captures Brown advocating for the integration of Myrtle Beach’s DEI strategies into Hilton Head Island’s strategic plan for the years 2023 to 2025. Brown’s remarks came after he and other council members attended a conference where various aspects of town leadership, including DEI policies, were discussed.

Interestingly, this brief clip only represents a small portion of a longer five-minute discussion, one where Brown was providing insights gained from the Municipal Association of South Carolina conference held in July 2022. During that meeting, he emphasized the importance of DEI, using relatable analogies to drive his point home.

Understanding the Concerns

The resident who shared the video, Steven Even, expressed that his primary concern was not solely about DEI but rather the implication of comparing Hilton Head Island to Myrtle Beach. “It’s election season, so we were looking through videos from various town council meetings and came across that. I just thought it was odd for that comment to be made,” he mentioned. Even has been vocal about his worries regarding overdevelopment on the island, which prompted him to contribute $500 to the campaign of Brown’s opponent, Daniel Anthony, who is advocating for a more resident-focused future.

Responses from Candidates

Both candidates vying for the Ward 1 seat of the Hilton Head Town Council have acknowledged the circulating video but have divergent reactions. Anthony, who is not active on social media, commented, “I don’t do social media at all, and this is exactly why,” emphasizing that he had no part in the video’s production or posting.

On the flip side, Brown expressed disappointment regarding the way the video has been utilized, stating, “It’s disappointing to see my current opponent’s supporters resort to disinformation and clickbait tactics, which only divide our community. I will continue to lead a campaign focused on the issues.”

DEI: A Positive Step Forward?

The town council meeting where Brown made his comments was held on August 16, 2022. During that session, he elaborated on DEI initiatives, aiming to dispel misconceptions surrounding it. He quipped, “DEI is not a monster. I say that again, DEI is not a monster.” Brown went further to encourage his fellow council members to consider incorporating DEI into their strategic planning, highlighting its significance for community growth.

To illustrate his point, Brown evoked the image of children of varying heights trying to see over a fence to watch a baseball game. He conveyed that equality is not merely about treating everyone the same but rather about providing everyone with the means to succeed. His heartfelt appeal emphasized the importance of embracing DEI as a crucial component of unity and progress.

Future Implications

Although DEI isn’t explicitly outlined in the town’s strategic plan for 2023-2025, values such as inclusivity, safety, and diversity are emphasized, reflecting the community’s aspirations. Residents now continue to express diverse viewpoints on the topic as the town approaches the election. The dialogue sparked by the video could serve as a pivotal moment in discussions surrounding the future direction of Hilton Head Island.

As the election draws near, Hilton Head Island’s residents are certainly intrigued by how these conversations will shape the community’s leadership and its path forward.
