Hey there, folks! Let’s journey back in time and look at some of the highlights from the chapters of our city, Beaufort’s past. These were the days that shaped our beloved town into the place we know and love today.
Now, remember that three-story apartment building at the corner of Charles and Port Republic streets? The iconic structure that now adorns our beautiful cityscape? Well, it all started on August 9, 2021, when the City of Beaufort Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBOA) gave the thumbs up to developer Dick Stewart and 303 Associates to build this masterpiece.
Back in 2021, our USC Beaufort men’s and women’s golf teams got a new mentor, none other than the talented and determined Cory Cottrell. He was promoted from interim coach to permanent head coach, a commendable achievement indeed!
Storming back to August 11, 1940, mother nature decided to flex her muscles when a hurricane made landfall at Beaufort. Packing winds of 104 mph, the storm wreaked havoc on Parris Island, causing $1.5 million in damages. But don’t fret! No serious injuries were reported. The recruit training was shifted to Quantico, Va, until necessary repairs were made.
2019 was a memorable year for our golfing champ Rob Simmons. It marked the record fourth time when Simmons pulled off a spectacular win at the Beaufort City Championship golf tournament at Fripp Island, beating his contenders by 11 whopping strokes!
Two days post-storm on August 13, 1940, the Marine post on Parris Island was re-designated Recruit Depot, Marine Barracks, Parris Island. A pivotal moment in the Island’s history indeed!
Fast forward to 2019, Beaufort Academy named Bobby Smith the head coach for boys basketball. An inspiring moment for all basketball enthusiasts in town!
The strong and always ready crew of the City of Beaufort-Town of Port Royal Fire Department welcomed their new chief, Tim Ogden, in 2021. He replaced the able and much-respected Reece Bertholf, who then took up the role of Deputy City Manager for the City of Beaufort.
So, as we stroll down memory lane, we’re reminded of the rich and vibrant history that makes our dear city of Beaufort what it is today. Here’s to many more memorable moments in our city’s story!
