Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park Welcomes Harriet Tubman Sculpture

HILTON HEAD ISLAND — Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park is making waves as it unveils a stunning tribute to one of America’s most revered icons. On December 19, the park presented “The Journey to Freedom,” a magnificent 9-foot bronze sculpture of abolitionist and social activist Harriet Tubman.

A Symbol of Resilience and Hope

This traveling exhibit, crafted by the talented Wesley Wofford from North Carolina, has been on an inspiring journey across the nation since 2020, celebrating Tubman’s relentless fight for freedom. Mitchelville, the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people, is especially significant for this artwork. “She traversed these waters and forests serving as a spy, scout, nurse and cook for the Union Army,” said Lola Campbell, chair of Mitchelville Freedom Park’s executive committee.

But that’s not all! In 1863, Tubman led the Combahee River Raid, which liberated over 750 enslaved individuals—many of whom sought refuge and opportunities right here in Mitchelville. Talk about a community aligning its history with a legacy!

Mitchelville: A Beacon of Hope

Did you know that Mitchelville was actually established in 1862? It served as an economic and cultural hub for many formerly enslaved individuals. The town’s success was a testament to the Port Royal Experiment, aimed at creating education and healthcare opportunities for those freed from slavery. “For thousands of people, freedom began on the north end of Hilton Head,” Campbell emphasized, proving just how pivotal this location has been in history.

Today, Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park stands not just as a park but as a living testimony to resilience and self-determination. The park features various archaeological efforts and architectural displays that vividly depict the rich past of this groundbreaking community.

Celebrating an Icon
