Go for 20 Family Reading Challenge Calls on 20,000 Families to Ignite a Reading Revolution in March

A National Push for Early Literacy Aims to Engage Families in 20 Minutes of Daily Reading During National Reading Month

Beaufort, SC — As National Reading Month approaches, a new initiative is on a mission to spark a reading revolution across the United States. The Go for 20 Family Reading Challenge seeks to unite 20,000 families with young children to read 20 books for at least 20 minutes each day throughout March 2025. With growing evidence that reading supports early brain development, language acquisition, and school readiness, this free challenge brings essential early literacy resources directly to families.

Studies consistently show that time spent reading to young children is one of the most significant predictors of academic success. Yet, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, less than half of children in the U.S. are read to daily. Go for 20 aims to close this gap by empowering families to make daily reading a simple, enjoyable habit with easy-to-use resources, including a digital challenge kit available to all registered participants.

“The Go for 20 Family Reading Challenge is a unique opportunity to engage families across the nation in reading,” says Tyranika Abrams, founder and children’s literacy advocate. “Our goal is to help families experience the joy and benefits of shared reading time in a way that’s accessible, interactive, and free. This challenge goes beyond the numbers—it’s about fostering stronger connections and building a culture of reading in the home.”

The digital Go for 20 challenge kit is designed to make participation easy and fun, with printable resources, reading logs, and interactive activities to keep families motivated throughout the month. Families are encouraged to visit their local libraries for books, with the program also serving as an opportunity to promote library memberships and engagement in local literacy programs.

In addition to nurturing literacy in early childhood, Go for 20 emphasizes the importance of community connection and support. Participating schools, libraries, and organizations will be able to track the number of books read by their families, sparking a friendly competition to engage communities while highlighting the collective impact of their reading efforts.

The Go for 20 Family Reading Challenge invites families with children ages 1–8 to register by visiting www.gofor20.com. Registration is now open and is entirely free.
