Explore Beaufort’s Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens for a Historical Delight

Explore the Charm of Beaufort: Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens

If you’re looking for a delightful way to experience a slice of history, then Beaufort, South Carolina, is the place to be this fall! The annual Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens is set to take place on October 19th and 20th, offering you a rare glimpse into some of the area’s most beautiful private homes and gardens that typically remain closed to the public.

A Glimpse into the Past

Founded in 1711, Beaufort is South Carolina’s second oldest town, steeped in rich history and stunning architecture. While it may not have expanded as quickly as its more bustling neighbors, Charleston and Savannah, Beaufort has a charm all its own. Nestled on a bend of the scenic Beaufort River, this historic town boasts architecture representing three centuries of style.

What to Expect

This year’s festival promises an extraordinary experience as gracious property owners open their doors to showcase their magnificent residences. According to Cynthia Jenkins, executive director of the Historic Beaufort Foundation, “The Fall Festival of Houses & Gardens is the best time to experience Beaufort’s extraordinary setting and architecture.” So, whether you’re a history buff or just someone who adores beautiful homes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Saturday’s Tour: A Walk Through History

The festivities kick off on Saturday, October 19, with a Walking Tour of the Beaufort Historic District from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. This tour offers a journey through a historic timeline, showcasing homes dating from the late 18th century to the late 19th century. Featured highlights include the Elizabeth Hext House, built around 1805-25, the elegant John A. Cuthbert House, circa 1810, and the stunning James Rhett House, which dates back to 1886.

Not to be missed is the John Mark Verdier House, a beautiful property that underwent extensive renovation in 2021, featuring meticulous restoration of its Federal Period door surround in 2023. This tour provides a fantastic way to appreciate the unique architectural styles that define Beaufort.

Sunday’s Southern Brunch and Exclusive Tour

On Sunday, October 20, the excitement continues with a Southern Brunch & Tour at the historic Tombé on St. Helena Island from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.. This lovingly restored home, built between 1790 and 1800, is a true treasure and a wonderful example of Beaufort Style architecture.

Tombé stands on a raised tabby foundation with a charming T-shape design, featuring three main rooms on each floor, centered around a welcoming hall. The property has a layered history, once passed down through generations of descendants of formerly enslaved people until 1971. Preservationist Jim Williams undertook its restoration in the 1970s, ensuring that the home retained its historical integrity.

A Journey Through Time

This home is more than just picturesque—it is a piece of living history. Author Theodore Rosengarten chronicled life at Tombé in his book, Tombé: Portrait of a Cotton Planter, revealing the daily lives of the residents— both enslaved and free— from agricultural practices to personal milestones.
