Exciting Additions to Women’s Health Care in Beaufort!

Beaufort residents have some great news to celebrate! To further enhance and expand access to women’s health care in our lovely Lowcountry area, Beaufort Memorial Hospital has welcomed two new experts to their Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists team: Dr. Curtis J. Elam, a highly experienced obstetrician and gynecologist, and nurse practitioner Melissa Mesenburg.

Meet Dr. Curtis J. Elam

Dr. Elam comes with an impressive background and a deep passion for women’s health. With decades of experience under his belt, he is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology. His specialties span the spectrum of general, routine, and specialized care for women from adolescence through menopause and beyond. Dr. Elam has a particular expertise in laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, handling everything from pelvic floor reconstruction to treating stress urinary incontinence with both slings and sutures.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee and completed his residency at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. It’s worth noting that Dr. Elam has always had a calling for medicine. After serving in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a battalion and regimental surgeon with the Marines, he found that obstetrics and gynecology were a perfect fit for him, leading him to start his career as an OBGYN in 1992.

Before joining Beaufort Memorial, Dr. Elam served as the staff physician and department head at the Clyburn Center for Primary Care. He also held position at Aiken Regional Medical Center and is excited to bring his wealth of knowledge and care to the women of Beaufort!

Introducing Nurse Practitioner Melissa Mesenburg

But that’s not all! Joining Dr. Elam is Melissa Mesenburg, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, who brings her own brand of enthusiasm and expertise. She graduated with her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2020, focusing on improving women’s health through enhancing educational initiatives. Melissa has spent the past four years practicing in the Beaufort area, previously working as a family nurse practitioner and most recently serving as the director of clinical operations at Friends of Caroline Hospice in Ridgeland, S.C.

Originally from Ohio, she isn’t new to the Beaufort community. In 2014, she began her journey at the Beaufort Memorial Collins Birthing Center as a postpartum nurse, where she developed a love for women’s health. Inspired by this passion, she decided to further her studies, eventually earning her doctorate!

A Comprehensive Care Team

Dr. Elam and Melissa join an already renowned team at Beaufort Memorial Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists, which includes fellow board-certified doctors Chris Benson, Marlena Masavage, and Tiffany Bersani. The team also includes certified practitioners like Maggie Bisceglia, Peyton Erb, and Catherine Tambroni-Parker. Together, they are dedicated to offering the best comprehensive care to women of all ages.

With locations at the Okatie Medical Pavilion and the Beaufort Medical Plaza, the practice is well-equipped to cater to a diverse range of women’s health services. They offer state-of-the-art technology, including digital ultrasound and the latest screening and diagnostic tools, ensuring patients receive top-notch care.
