Hey Beaufort! The buzz in the air is palpable as we approach a very important day for all residents—the General Election on November 5th. On this day, you have the chance to make your voice heard and play a vital role in shaping the future of your community and country. Undoubtedly, one hot topic is the presidential race between former President Donald Trump and current Vice President Kamala Harris. However, let’s not forget that local elections hold just as much significance.
So, who gets to participate in this exciting day? Simply put, if you’re 18 years or older, a U.S. citizen, and have a valid voter registration along with a photo ID, you’re good to go! Acceptable forms of ID include:
Don’t forget, it’s required that you register to vote at least 30 days before Election Day. How do you check if you’re all set? You can simply visit scvotes.gov to confirm your registration status.
Mark your calendars and set your alarms! Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on November 5th. Remember, if you’re in line before the 7 p.m. cutoff, don’t worry; you’ll still be allowed to vote!
Wondering where to cast your vote? To find your polling place, head to scvotes.gov. For specific polling places within Beaufort County, you can check this list.
This year’s ballot isn’t just about the presidential election. Local races are incredibly important and worth your attention. Here are some highlights:
Also on your ballot will be the 2024 Transportation Sales & Use Tax Referendum. This is significant! It proposes a 1% sales tax on most retail purchases for up to ten years or until $950 million is collected. The funds will predominantly go toward transportation projects in the county, with a small portion allocated to land and water protection.
The referendum consists of two questions: the first regarding the tax itself and the second regarding $515 million in bonds that may be issued to complete some projects earlier.
There’s also a constitutional amendment on the ballot proposing a change to voter qualifications. It asks whether the constitution should specify that only a U.S. citizen who is at least 18 years old and properly registered is entitled to vote. This amendment has garnered some debate, so it’s worth considering as you prepare to cast your vote.
If you encounter any issues at the polls, don’t hesitate to bring it to the attention of the poll manager. If it’s still not resolved, you can get in touch with the Beaufort County elections office at 843-255-6900. For any concerns about election fraud, the State Law Enforcement (SLED) hotline is available at 843-4SC-VOTE.
This election is your chance to influence change, whether it’s local issues affecting your neighborhood or significant national matters. Let’s make it a day to remember, Beaufort! Don’t just sit back; get informed and vote!
