Open Mic Night and Photography Workshop to be Held by the Conroy Center in August

Hey Beaufort residents– lend us your ears! The Pat Conroy Literary Center, our beloved nonprofit organization, is all set to add two more events to its long list of engaging educational programs. This August, the center has planned two pow-wows— an open mic night and a photography workshop. The best part? You can totally be a part of these virtual events right from your own homes.

Open Mic Night: A Call for Beaufort’s Writers and Poets

Get ready for a cool night of poetry and prose on August 8, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The Conroy Center’s monthly Open Mic Night goes virtual this month. Our highlighted poet for this session is Jessica Goody, the talented wordsmith who penned Phoenix: Transformation Poems.

But that’s not all! We’re also opening up the mic to local writers who would like to toss their literary hat in the ring. If you’re among the brave souls wanting to share your own work, it’s simple! Just shoot an email to contact@patconroyliteracycentre.org and get yourself signed up. For those who are more comfortable being part of the audience, you can watch the live-stream of the event on the Conroy Center’s Facebook page starting at 6:00 p.m. Hosting the open mic will be the brilliant poet, Melissa St. Clair.

About Our Featured Writer

Jessica Goody isn’t just an award-winning writer, she’s also a community gem. She’s contributed to over a hundred publications, taught writing, and constantly brings light to the local writing scene. Her book, Defense Mechanisms, got recently recognized as a “Power Read” and received an honorable mention for the 2020 North Street Book Prize. And don’t forget her winning the 2016 Magnets and Ladders Poetry Prize. Truly she’s a big deal in the world of words!

Photography Workshop: Writing with a New Lens

Have a knack for photography? Love to write? If so, check out the virtual workshop on August 14 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. This fun-filled two hours will be led by the award-winning author Amber Wheeler Bacon. Amber will teach participants how to use photographs as creative writing prompts.

The Expose & Compose workshop merges professional and amateur photography with poems and short prose to brew up an exciting canvas for creativity. The workshop will dish out 4 prompts, prepping you to come with your writing gears in full motion. It’s limited to 15 participants so be sure to book your spot ahead at the Center’s Eventbrite page.

About Our Instructor

Amber Wheeler Bacon isn’t just an awe-inspiring writer but also a devoted mentor. She’s been honored by several literary awards including the 2018 Breakout Writers Prize, 2021 Bread Loaf scholarship and recently made it as a finalist for the 2023 Chautauqua Janus Prize. She gets her teaching vibes on at Coastal Carolina University and has served as a fiction editor and managing editor for various literary publications. Clearly, Amber knows her stuff!
