Conroy Center Throws Open Mic and Photo-Inspired Writing Workshop in August

Hey there, Beaufort! In case you didn’t already know, there’s this groovy non-profit organization named the Pat Conroy Literary Center that is doing awesome stuff in our town. They’re open to all of us for friendly, informative tours from Thursday to Sunday from midday until 4:00 pm. Plus, they put on all sorts of cool educational events year-round for writers, bookworms, teachers, and students. This August, they’re hosting two great virtual events that you can tune into from the comfort of your own couch.

Online Open Mic with a Sweet Poetry Scene

On the evening of Thursday, August 8, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, they are taking their monthly Open Mic Night to the interwebs! This event will feature Jessica Goody, an award-winning poet who authored the transformative book Phoenix. Alongside Jessica, there will be short readings by other writers spanning all sorts of different styles. If you’re a writer looking to give your work a voice, you can register to read by shooting an email over to contact@patconroyliterarycenter.org. If you’re more of a listener, just tune into the live stream on the Center’s Facebook page starting just past 6:00 pm that evening. Hosting this cool gathering is another fabulous poet, Melissa St. Clair.

Let’s talk about our featured poet Jessica Goody, she’s a champion in the field. You may have come across her work in over one hundred publications. She’s taught writing courses and facilitated poetry slams for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and her poems have a place in the Hilton Head Poetry Trail. She’s definitely got skills!

Unleashing Creativity through Photography

On the evening of Wednesday, August 14, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, there will be an online workshop led by none other than Amber Wheeler Bacon, an award-winning author. In her workshop Expose & Compose, attendees will use photographs as creative writing prompts. The idea is that photographers can use photos to spool out even more possibilities for their work. Who doesn’t love a good story, right? The workshop will include 4 prompts, so participants, come ready to write! This virtual workshop has room for 15 participants and costs $45/person. Amber Wheeler Bacon is a writer and teacher with an impressive list of accolades. Her work has graced the pages of numerous publications. She is a recipient of awards and scholarships and teaches English at Coastal Carolina University. Amber certainly knows her stuff!
