Celebrate MLK Jr. Day with a Parade!

Mark your calendars for January 18 at 10 a.m. because downtown Ridgeland will come alive with the Jasper County MLK Jr. Observance Parade! This annual event is hosted by the MLK Garden of Light Committee and promises to be a day filled with community spirit, fantastic floats, and lively performances from various bands.

The parade kicks off with lineup starting at 8:30 a.m., so families and friends can gather early to grab the perfect viewing spot. Remember, this event is completely free and open to the public.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrate the values of equality and justice. If you have questions about the parade or want to join in, feel free to reach out via email at golifemlk@gmail.com.

Honoring Our Veterans This November!

Veterans Day. Various ceremonies are planned across Beaufort County and surrounding areas, giving everyone the chance to pay their respects and show gratitude.

Teachers and members of Veterans Service Organizations are encouraged to start planning for this special day. To assist educators in teaching students about the significance of Veterans Day, a Veterans Day Teachers Resource Guide is available for download from the VA’s website. This guide is filled with invaluable educational resources, making it easier to share the stories of our heroes with the younger generations.

Did you know that there are approximately 18 million veterans living in the United States? Many of them are relatives of students, making it even more important for our communities to recognize their sacrifices. Each year, the National Veterans Day Ceremony takes place at Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m., and it’s a momentous occasion that draws many to remember and honor the brave.

Mr. Larry Dandridge, a Vietnam War veteran, brings to light the importance of teaching young minds about veterans’ contributions and sacrifices. It’s not just about remembering; it’s about understanding the principles of service and dedication.

Exciting Community Events Coming Up!

In addition to these significant observances, mark your calendars for February 24! The Beaufort Junior Service League will hold a dress and accessories distribution event for high school students from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Bridges Preparatory School. This initiative helps students who may need a little extra assistance preparing for prom or other special occasions. Public school students should bring a student ID, while private school students need a note signed by a teacher or administrator to receive items.

Recent Events to Celebrate Community Spirit

And let’s not forget the fantastic Beaufort River Swim that recently took place. This year boasted the largest turnout in several years with an impressive 179 participants. Cohen Bruner emerged victorious, winning the overall championship for the second time! Proceeds from this thrilling swim go directly to the Wardle Family YMCA’s Learn to Swim program, a vital initiative that ensures every child in Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton Counties learns this essential life skill.

Thanks to recent partnerships, free swim lessons have also been successfully provided to second-graders in Hampton County, proving to be an impactful program that has been approved for continuation over the next five years. What a great way to support our community!

So there you have it! With all of these upcoming events, there’s something for everyone in the Lowcountry. Be sure to step out and participate, whether it’s honoring our veterans or joining in the celebration and outreach. The spirit of community is alive and well here in our beautiful region!
