Cold Weather Shelters Open in Beaufort County

Beaufort County, South Carolina, is bracing for a blast of frigid temperatures as winter weather approaches. In response to the chilly forecast, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has opened two cold weather shelters to provide warmth and support for residents. If you or someone you know needs a cozy spot to escape the cold, these shelters are ready to welcome you.

Sea Island Presbyterian Church

The first shelter is located at Sea Island Presbyterian Church, found at 81 Lady’s Island Drive in Beaufort. This shelter will be open from January 19 through January 22, starting each evening at 5 p.m. and closing the following morning at 8 a.m. The church is not just a warm place to sleep; it’s also offering meals to make your stay more comfortable.

Guests can look forward to dinner provided nightly and breakfast in the morning. Showers will also be available to help warm up after a cold night. However, it’s important to remember that while service animals are allowed, the shelter has a strict no-weapons, no-alcohol, no-smoking, and no-pets policy. For any additional information regarding operations at Sea Island Presbyterian Church or to clarify any questions, residents can call 843-525-0696.

Christ Lutheran Church

The second shelter is situated at Christ Lutheran Church, located at 829 William Hilton Parkway in Hilton Head Island. This location will open its doors from January 20 through January 22, starting at 5:30 p.m., and closing the next morning at 7:30 a.m. Like the Sea Island Presbyterian Church, Christ Lutheran will also provide dinner and to-go breakfast meals for the guests.

Just as with the other shelter, service animals can accompany their owners as long as the no-weapons, no-alcohol, no-smoking, and no-pets rules are followed. If you have any questions about Christ Lutheran Church, please reach out by calling 843-540-4299.

Preparing for the Cold

“four P’s”: people, pets, pipes, and plants. In this extreme weather, it’s crucial to ensure that your family members are warm, your pets are safe, your pipes are protected, and your plants are cared for.

As the weekend approaches, it’s worth noting that a winter storm may make its way to the Lowcountry by the week of January 20. Meteorologists are gearing up for a drop in temperatures that could reach into the 30s. With windchill possibly dropping to a bone-chilling 10 degrees, residents should be prepared for a serious drop in warmth.

While the chances for significant snow accumulation remain uncertain, there is a 30 to 50 percent likelihood of minor impacts from winter precipitation. This could lead to slick roads and potential travel issues. Residents should keep an eye out, as there’s also a 20 to 30 percent chance of moderate impacts that might trigger a winter storm warning.

As we gear up for what could be some of the coldest weather yet, rainfall amounts of up to 1.5 inches are expected over the weekend leading up to the colder temperatures, though no significant flooding is anticipated at this time.

The Beaufort County School District is on high alert and is monitoring the evolving weather conditions. They have assured families that any changes in school operations will be communicated by midday on the upcoming Monday.

For those interested, the National Weather Service will be providing updates as more information becomes available regarding snow and ice forecasts, so it’s essential to stay informed.

So whether you’re looking to stay warm at one of the shelters or making preparations at home, it’s time to bundle up and get ready for the chill ahead!
