Severe Flooding Pushes Edisto and Ashley Rivers to Record-breaking Levels

No one predicted that rain and flooding in Charleston would get this crazy, or this fast. Nearby areas of the Edisto and Ashley Rivers are in a right pickle, with locals and authorities having to combat the fallout from what can only be described as severe flooding, courtesy of Tropical Storm Debby.

Debby, arriving with relentless rain, and frankly rather rudely overstaying her welcome, has caused a whole lot of trouble, especially for the good folks in Dorchester, Colleton, and Berkeley counties. With water levels reaching record-breaking levels in the Edisto River and the Ashley River, homes and properties in the surrounding areas are in serious danger.

Dorchester, Colleton, and Berkeley Counties under Serious Flood Warning

These counties are effectively in crisis mode right now with the Edisto River basin and Ashley River areas under serious risk of further overflowing. Residents of these regions are being urged to evacuate as soon as possible.

Edisto River Sets a Brand-new Record

The Edisto River, in particular, has hit the headlines, with its water levels surging up to a whopping 17.06 feet, surpassingly its previous 2015 record of 16.06 feet. This crazy overflowing doesn’t just break a record; it fairly shatters the previous high recorded back in 1904, setting the highest level since 1945. County officials are rightfully on high-alert given that the current situation is nearing the record level set back in 1925, which was 17.5 feet.

There’s already been a total of 46 rescues made in the Edisto River basin area, a testament to the life-threatening situation this tropical storm has left in its wake.

Water Levels in Ashley River Still Rising

The Ashley River is another trouble-zone, as its water levels keep rising steadily. The Ashley River as of last measurements had reached 24.85 feet, kicking the previous record of 22.7 feet to the curb.

Be under no illusion about the seriousness of this situation. Dry land in areas normally untouched by water is steadily being taken over by the river. Local authorities are advising folks living in these areas to keep a close watch on conditions and be ready to get to safety if need be.

Road Closures and Life-saving Tips

Stay off the roads, people. The flooding has rendered numerous roads impassable with even smallish streams and creeks bursting their banks due to extra water runoff from earlier rainfalls. It can’t be said enough – if you come across a flooded road while driving, avoid it at all costs. As the old saying goes, “Turn around, don’t drown”. To ignore this advice is to risk your life.

In these uncertain times, keep an ear to the ground and stay informed through local news reports. Take heed of warnings and evacuation orders set by county officials, because at the end of the day, it’s about staying safe and protecting our homes and property. Meanwhile, the Lowcountry keeps grappling with the unexpected impacts of Tropical Storm Debby.
