BURTON — The community is shaken after a tragic shooting incident took place in the Magnolia Apartments early in the morning on September 16. The incident, which unfolded shortly after reports of gunfire began to surface, has left residents on edge and searching for answers.
Arianna Mulligan, just a teenager, was pronounced dead shortly after midnight due to a gunshot wound, as stated by Deputy Beaufort County Coroner Andrew McNeese. This heartbreaking news has left her family and friends in deep sorrow, a sentiment echoed throughout the entire community. “It’s simply devastating to see a young life taken so suddenly,” shared a neighbor who witnessed the chaotic scene.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received the alarming reports of shots fired around 10 p.m. on September 15. Armed with courage and quick response, Deputies rushed to the scene, only to find chaos unfolding at the apartment complex. According to Sgt. Danny Allen, there were multiple shooters, although he wasn’t sure exactly how many were involved.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered Mulligan along with two other juvenile-aged individuals who had also sustained gunshot wounds. The urgency of the situation was palpable as Mulligan was being quickly transported to the Medical University of South Carolina. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries during that transport.
The impact of this tragic event is rippling through the community, especially with the added concern for safety. In response to the shooting, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has ramped up law enforcement presence around the schools and the broader neighborhood to ease fears and promote security among residents.
In the wake of this tragedy, it is heartening to see support systems coming together. Arianna attended Whale Branch Early College High School from August 2021 until June 2023. The school’s spokesperson, Candace Bruder, announced that grief counseling services were made available on the day of this unfortunate event and will continue for those who wish to reach out.
This tragic event raises many questions, and law enforcement officials are asking for any information the public may have related to the shooting. Anyone with knowledge regarding the incident is encouraged to reach out to Master Sergeant Todd Duncan at 843-255-3418, or information can also be communicated through the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office website.
As we come to terms with this heartbreaking loss, it serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent necessity for community solidarity. Look around your neighborhood, share conversations, and check in on one another. The safety of our young people must remain a priority.
In these times, it is crucial to foster an atmosphere of support and understanding. As a community, let’s honor the memory of young Arianna Mulligan and work towards making our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
As more information becomes available regarding the investigation, we hope for justice and resolution. Meanwhile, our thoughts and prayers are with Mulligan’s family and friends and everyone affected by this devastating event.
