Experience the Charm of Burnt Church Distillery in Bluffton

If you’re searching for an exciting new destination just outside Savannah, look no further than Burnt Church Distillery in Bluffton, South Carolina. This vibrant distillery has quickly made a name for itself since its opening in March 2021, and it’s a great spot to sip on some expertly crafted spirits while soaking in the local history.

Welcoming Atmosphere and Rich History

Upon entering the distillery, you’re greeted by a stunning facility complete with a beautiful bricked herringbone-patterned courtyard and lush landscaping that welcomes you in. I had the pleasure of meeting Distillery President Chris Crowe inside the inviting Study, a cozy nook just off the tasting room and restaurant known as the Sanctuary. With its soaring vaulted ceilings lined with reclaimed oak, exposed brick, and a lovely circular stained-glass window featuring the Burnt Church logo, the space is both inviting and impressive.

Interestingly, the name “Burnt Church” is derived from a nearby road and reflects Bluffton’s rich antebellum history, which is showcased through various educational wall panels in the Study. Crowe pointed out that the doors to the Study are original to the 1854 Church of the Cross, offering a tangible link to the past. This connection only adds to the charm of the distillery.

A Labor of Love

Burnt Church Distillery is the brainchild of entrepreneurial brothers Billy and Sean Watterson, who invested millions not only in building the beautiful distillery and venue spaces but also in extensive historical research and developing unique whiskey recipes before they even opened their doors. It’s clear that every aspect of the business—right down to the fully stocked gift shop—is a labor of love.

You can find a variety of clever products at the Mercantile, including Confession Bourbon, Sin Eater Cinnamon Whiskey, and Palmer’s Stretch Rye Whiskey. What’s particularly exciting is the distillery’s commitment to using non-GMO corn for their vodkas and gins and sourcing grains from local South Carolina farmers.

A Glimpse Behind the Scenes

During my visit, Chris offered me a peek into the distillation process. They currently produce between 1,000 to 1,200 barrels a year, with distribution extending into South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and even all the way to New York City. It’s fascinating to see the 500-gallon pot still in action, and to learn that production usually includes five runs a week, each yielding five barrels. The aging process for whiskey can take years, with Crowe forecasting production needs as far out as 2036!

Delicious Tastes Await

No visit would be complete without sampling the spirits, and the tasting room at Burnt Church delivers on that front. Kaylee Cunningham, the Food and Beverage Manager, introduced me to the menu, which features both classic cocktails and rotating signature cocktails that allow bartenders to showcase their creativity. I tried the Old Town Old Fashioned, made with Anita’s Choice Bourbon, which was nothing short of heavenly. For those who prefer a non-alcoholic option, Kaylee served me “The Watterson,” a delightful mocktail packed with spicy ginger and blueberry flavor.

Exciting Future Plans

Burnt Church Distillery isn’t just stopping at great liquors; they have plans to expand into new offerings, including a sports bar and more menu options. Special events like mixology classes and private tours are also on the horizon, making this an exciting destination for both locals and travelers.

A Community-Focused Mission

One heartwarming aspect of this distillery is its commitment to the community. Each month, they select a Giveback Partner to receive a portion of proceeds from their cocktail-of-the-month program, including their seasonal drinks—like this month’s pumpkin-themed cocktails in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
