Bridges Prep Boys Basketball Team Shines at Earl Campbell Preseason Tournament
Seabrook – The excitement of the basketball season kicked off with a bang for the Bridges Prep Buccaneers. Entering the season with high hopes, they were ranked fifth in Class 2A by the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association. So far, they’ve proven they deserve that ranking by dominating the annual Earl Campbell Preseason Tournament with three impressive wins.
Strong Start with Dominating Wins
The Bucs began their tournament journey by absolutely rolling over Royal Live Oaks, winning convincingly with a score of 81-38 in the opening round. Talk about making a statement! In the semifinals, they showed their grit by holding off a feisty Allendale-Fairfax squad, coming out on top with a score of 63-51.
Then came the championship game against the host team, Whale Branch. It was a nail-biter, with the game closely contested for most of the first half. However, the Bucs turned up the heat, bursting out to a 15-point lead early in the third quarter. Whale Branch didn’t go down easy, thanks to Quincy Fields, who got hot from behind the arc, keeping them within striking distance.
A Close Call But No Victory for Whale Branch
As the game entered the final quarter, things got tense. Eddie Gonzalez launched a deep three from the left wing, bringing the Warriors within just three points at 47-44. However, the Buccaneers held their ground and managed to edge out Whale Branch with a final score of 62-56. What a thrilling finish!
Stars of the tournament included seniors Amarion Wilson, Christian Arroyo, and QJ Young, who all averaged double-digit scoring throughout the three games. Clearly, this talented trio has the skills to lead their team into an exciting season.
John Paul II Boys Basketball Team Off to an Impressive Start
In other local basketball news, the John Paul II Golden Warriors are making waves this season as well. After a promising previous year, they’ve thrust themselves into the spotlight with a solid start. Their latest win was a nail-biting 47-46 victory at Hilton Head Prep.
Star player Garrett Heathcott made an impact with a fabulous performance, hitting three 3-pointers and scoring a total of 19 points. This victory is particularly sweet as it was against the two-time defending SCISA 3A champions, HHP, and even though the Dolphins had Ty Harpring scoring an impressive 31 points, it wasn’t enough to seal the deal. JPII now holds a perfect record of 4-0 and is set to face HHP again in a rematch at Sea Pines this Wednesday. Fans, get ready!
Battery Creek Boys Basketball Faces Challenges
Meanwhile, the Battery Creek Dolphins kicked off their season at the Savannah Hoops Showdown held at the Enmarket Arena but faced a tough loss, falling 50-39 to Calvary Day. It was not the start they hoped for, but Tyrese Smith kept spirits high with a commendable 16 points, while fellow sophomore Michael Williams also contributed with 10 points.
The Dolphins have a busy week ahead, with three games lined up, including rivalry matchups against Whale Branch and Beaufort High. It’s all about regrouping and coming back stronger for these young athletes!
With so much action buzzing on the courts, local basketball fans have plenty to be excited about. It’s shaping up to be a thrilling season! Keep an eye on these teams and players as they continue to strive for victory.
