Bluffton’s Local Woman Calls for the Community to Support “Blessings in a Box” Initiative

Someone’s been scattering a little love over in Bluffton, South Carolina. It’s come in the form of compact, weather-resistant cabinets filled with food and other essential items. We’ll call these cabinets Blessing Boxes, and they’re making a difference in the lives of people who’re facing some tough times.

What’s a Blessing Box?

A Blessing Box is just as it sounds- a little box of blessings. It’s a small, weatherproof cupboard that’s placed in public areas where anybody can access. Filled with non-perishable food items and other essentials, these boxes are open for anyone to take what they need, no questions asked. It’s like a free tiny grocery store that’s open 24/7 and operates on the goodwill of the community.

With Bluffton finding itself dotted with these Blessing Boxes, there’s a shared motto that joins them: “Take what you need, leave what you can.” These boxes are designed to allow people in need to grab help anonymously and easily, making them a powerful resource for those who may struggle to ask for assistance.

The Force Behind the Blessing Boxes

Kathy Straughn is the kind-hearted woman who started the Blessing Box Project in Bluffton. Kathy shared that the continuity and success of this initiative depend entirely on the surrounding community. “We really need community backing to keep these boxes filled because they’re emptied daily.” She adds, “There’s no reason for any kid to go to bed hungry.”

Volunteers are also a significant part of this initiative. They ensure the boxes are kept clean, organized, and frequently restocked. It’s a simple yet profound way for the locals to give back to the community. Whether you are an individual wanting to donate or a business planning to give back, every contribution is appreciated. The boxes constantly seek non-perishable food items like canned goods, pasta, and cereal.

And yet, it also highlights the need for continual donations to ensure that nobody in the Bluffton community has to face tough times alone.
