Bluffton Rotary Club Shakes Up The Community With Grant Recipients and Scholarships

The Rotary Club of Bluffton is bringing a breath of fresh air by handing out sweet grants. They’ve carefully combed through a stack of applications and are doling out the loot to some worthy local charities.

Some of the lucky winners include Meals on Wheels, Bluffton Self Help, Special Olympics and Recreation for bus repair and a driver, and the South Carolina Nurse Retention Initiative. Talk about making a difference in the neighborhood!

But that’s not all. The Rotary Club is also spreading some love on the education front by passing out their Fall 2024 scholarships. Lucky recipients are Riley Burkhart from Bluffton High School, Caleb Winget from Hilton Head Christian Academy and Kristen Claffy from May River High School.

HRMC Welcomes A Skilled Newbie

Over in Varnville, things are just as happening. The Hampton Regional Medical Center has rolled out the welcome mat to Dr. Mark Wikenheiser, a seasoned orthopedic surgeon.

Karen Terry, aka the Boss of Coastal Plains Physician Associates, is all stoked about the team’s new addition: “With the addition of Dr. Wikenheiser, we now offer specialty care physicians with training from the Medical University of South Carolina and Mayo Clinic.”

Seems like the good doc is happy to be a part of his new community. “My wife and I are loving this area,” he says. And with 30 years of experience tucked under his lab coat, he’s ready to sprinkle his magic medical pixie dust all over Hampton Regional.

The CEO of Allendale County Hospital, Lari Gooding, sounds super excited about the whole enterprise. “The goal is to treat not only the wound, but the underlying cause of the wound,” he says. The hospital is planning to keep the Advanced Wound Care open every Wednesday afternoon from Aug,28.

USC Salkehatchie Names New Associate Dean

Moving on to the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie, there’s a new face in the ranks. Dr. Sarah Miller has been crowned the associate dean for academic and student affairs. She seems enthusiastic about the future, saying, “I am honored to take on the role of associate dean.”

And her commitment to the university doesn’t end there. Dr. Miller has a history of enriching her students’ lives by setting up connections with local entities. Whether she’s involving her students in the projects with the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society or securing a whopping $1.25 million grant from the S.C. Legislature, Dr. Miller is always on the move.
