Bluffton Prioritizes Permits for Tropical Storm Debby Recovery

The good folks of Bluffton Town are doing some pretty neat things to offer a helping hand to its residents who were affected by the recent visit of Tropical Storm Debby. Speeding up the process of permits for repairs at absolutely no cost, so that everyone can get back on their feet as soon as possible.

Emergency Permits On The Ready

After the storm that blew through on August 5, town staff jumped into action, ready to assist homeowners who needed emergency permits for repairs or to file damage documentation. Rob Currall, Chief Building Official, drove home the point about how vital it is to keep a record of the damage to back up any future insurance claims, just like you would do a car insurance claim, especially if similar weather incidents with repeated damage occur.

No Need for Permits for Some Jobs

Scrap that idea of needing a permit for debris removal or minor repair work that’s just to avoid more damage to property or injuries to yours truly. Just replace damaged items with identical ones because that doesn’t require a permit. And, for those minor leaks that don’t need to bother the structural, mechanical, or electrical folks, no need for a permit too.

No Charge For You!

On top of things, town staff is waiving all fees for emergency permits. How cool is that? But remember, these permits are in effect for 30 business days. However, the town could extend or pull back that timeframe if they deem it necessary.

Special Requirements for Certain Areas

For those of you living adjacent to a highway corridor (like Hwy 46, 170, 278 or May River Road) or in the Bluffton Historic District, there are some special requirements when applying for a permit. You have to bring along photos of your property before all this storm chaos, and be warned some unique regulations apply to repairs in the Historic District.

If you’ve got structural damage, bring along photos of that too. And just remember, our town staff will review each case on an individual basis.
