Bluffton’s Own Ellen McAndris Named Nurse of the Year!

In the heart of Bluffton, a remarkable woman is making waves and earning accolades in the nursing community. Ellen McAndris, who has dedicated her life to providing exceptional care, has recently been celebrated as the Nurse of the Year for 2024 by the South Carolina Home Care & Hospice Association (SCHCHA). This prestigious honor was awarded during the annual H.O.M.E (Hospice Order Medical Explanation) awards event held on November 14 in stunning Myrtle Beach.

A True Champion of Compassionate Care

The award highlights those nurses who have showcased a lifetime commitment to compassionate nursing. And let me tell you, Ellen embodies this spirit! With over 250 member organizations up for consideration, her recognition truly shines a light on her profound commitment to nursing and the unparalleled care she provides to both patients and their families.

Hospice Care of the Lowcountry is proud to play a role in Ellen’s journey, offering compassionate end-of-life services, palliative care, and grief support in the picturesque areas of Beaufort and Jasper counties. A spokesperson shared that Ellen’s dedication is a remarkable testament to her mission of *honoring life* through compassionate care and guidance, especially during life’s most challenging moments.

From the Big Apple to Bluffton

Now, let’s take a step back and look at Ellen’s incredible journey. It all started when she graduated from the Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing in the Bronx, New York, back in 1966. With a passion for caring for others, she quickly set the stage for an impressive career.

After earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, NJ, Ellen didn’t stop there. She later expanded her knowledge, obtaining both a master’s in public administration and professional accountancy from Long Island University’s School of Business. Talk about commitment!

A Versatile and Skilled Professional

Ellen initially worked as a hospital staff nurse, honing her skills in critical care. With determination, she earned her critical care nursing certificate in 1990. A couple of years later, she pivoted her focus to home care and hospice. As a clinical nursing supervisor, she oversaw the care of over 300 patients.

Her role didn’t stop there. Ellen later took on an additional title of Director of Professional/Clinical Services, managing five adult care teams—a testament to her leadership and organizational skills!

In the Classroom and Community

Education has also been a significant part of Ellen’s life. For the past 15 years, she has served as an adjunct professor in the Nursing Graduate program at the College of Science and Health. Isn’t that inspiring? Even while juggling multiple roles, she made time to share her knowledge with aspiring nurses!

In 2011, Ellen relocated to Bluffton, bringing her invaluable expertise and heartfelt approach to patient care with her. She began working at an outpatient surgery center, eventually finding her way to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry.

Valued Member of the Community

Since 2021, Ellen has been a PRN RN at Hospice Care of the Lowcountry. Her extensive background and unwavering dedication make her a valuable asset to the organization and the community. She continues to support the mission of providing compassionate care for individuals facing serious illnesses, end-of-life challenges, and grief.

Ellen McAndris’s journey is one of unwavering commitment, expertise, and service to others. Her recent recognition as Nurse of the Year is a proud moment for not only her but for the entire Bluffton community.
