Bluffton Community in Shock After Thieves Steal 28 Appliances from New Townhomes

Community in Disarray

Bluffton Community Hit Hard by Appliance Thieves

Bluffton—an area known for its scenic views and burgeoning communities—was shaken recently by an audacious theft that has left a local rental development reeling. At Saddlewood at Pepper Hall, a new collection of townhomes, thieves took advantage of unoccupied units, dragging away an astonishing 28 brand-new appliances.

The Great Appliance Heist

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene early on the morning of September 16, only to find a disturbing scene unfolding. A construction supervisor alerted them that at least eight units had been unlawfully entered, all of which were in their final stages of completion with freshly done paint jobs.

“It’s so disappointing,” the supervisor reportedly told police about the brazen activity. The thieves managed to force open windows and break plastic locks, allowing them to unlock front doors and stroll right in. What followed was a theft that felt more like a scene from a heist movie than a crime amidst a newly developing neighborhood.

What Was Stolen?

In nearly every unit, thieves took off with not just the washing machines and dryers but also Whirlpool and Frigidaire appliances, including refrigerators and ovens. The total loss amounts to a staggering 28 appliances. Officers on-site discovered scratches on the floors—evidence of the appliances being haphazardly dragged out of the homes. Additionally, it was noted that there was water damage on the flooring caused by severed water lines which allowed the thieves to remove appliances with ease.

Investigation Still Underway

As of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests have been made in connection with this large-scale theft. According to Sheriff’s office spokesperson Sgt. Danny Allen, it’s still unclear if the suspects were caught on camera, but investigators are waiting for more information from the property management. They are particularly interested in the serial numbers of the stolen goods.

“These people could have had all the time in the world,” Allen expressed, indicating that the construction site provided ample opportunity for the thieves, given the continuous traffic of workers throughout the day. It’s a reminder that places like this can often fall victim to crime because of inadequate security measures and the frequent influx of people coming and going.

The Bigger Picture

Saddlewood townhomes are part of a significant residential project called Pepper Hall that aims to revitalize the area. When the construction wraps up, the land will not only feature over 100 single-family homes but also hundreds of rental units, and it’s expected to integrate some commercial spaces as well.

Interestingly, this project had its share of controversy—in 2020, Beaufort County Council had to weigh options, even agreeing to pay $1.5 million to create an 18-acre passive park in the area. This was part of a public-private agreement as part of the development process.

The Future of Saddlewood

While the latest incident has been quite the blow, it also serves as a wake-up call for projects like Saddlewood and others on the cusp of completion. The leasing office at Saddlewood declined to share specifics about the loss incurred from the theft, indicating perhaps that they wish to keep that under wraps while they work on damage control.

However, residents and prospective tenants alike are left hoping for a prompt resolution. Community safety is crucial, especially as Bluffton grows and attracts more families and individuals looking for homes.

With plans for development still on the horizon, it’s safe to say that the people of Bluffton will be keeping a close eye on this community—and on the security measures in place to protect their future homes.
