Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority Dealing with Aftermath of Debby

Right here in Beaufort County, there’s been quite a situation brewing. You might remember how the recent storm, nicknamed Debby, swooped into town and caused a flood of issues, literally. One of the organizations particularly affected has been the Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority (BJWSA).

The Not-So-Clear Waters

First things first, let’s clear the cloudy waters – quite literally. Remember that flooding wedged by Debby in our town? As all that water started receding back into the upstream forests and wetlands, it dropped some unexpected surprises. Apparently, the floodwaters increased the level of organic material and dissolved minerals in the Savannah River. And you guessed it, this has caused water discoloration in some areas. Not the kind of rainbow you’d want to see, right?

How is the Authority Responding?

Don’t worry, though. BJWSA, the savvy organization they are, have already tightened their reins on the situation. They’ve tweaked up their treatment process while keeping a close eye on water conditions straight from the source. Plus, they’re smartly drawing out more water from other sources like wells and their Purrysburg reservoir.

Are you wondering about the safety of the water? Well, BJWSA asserts that the process to disinfect the water, making it totally safe, hasn’t been affected at all. So, relax and drink up (safely.) That being said, they do suggest putting off washing your laundry, especially the lighter hues, since staining is a possibility. No one asked for tie-dyed sheets, after all!

Should We Flush Out the Water Mains and Plumbing?

The short answer is – not really. Here’s why. Flushing the water mains and in-house plumbing might seem like the logical thing to do. Flush out the problem, right? Not in this case. BJWSA mentions that even though the discoloration is not a localized issue, flushing the systems may not clear the muddiness. So, hold onto that gallon of water.

Looking Ahead

While we do love our fair share of excitement in Beaufort County, we weren’t quite expecting storm Debby to stir this up. Whether its storms or any other challenges, we must adapt and overcome. That’s precisely what BJWSA is doing to ensure we keep getting fresh water, and steps they’ve taken can serve as an excellent example for all water authorities. Let’s keep supporting these actions and continue to stay informed about how our local organizations are helping us navigate through these unforeseen situations!
