Big Moves in the Lowcountry: Bluffton Rotary Grants, USC Salkehatchie Hires and More

If there’s one thing we can always count on, it’s that things are always happening in the Lowcountry. From big wins in the community to news from our local schools, there’s always something buzzing in our corner of the world. Today, we’re giving a shoutout to the Rotary Club of Bluffton’s recent grant and scholarship recipients, introducing a fresh face joining our medical field, celebrating a new healthcare facility, and admiring a newly appointed dean at USC Salkehatchie.

Bluffton Rotary’s Community Contributions

Bluffton Rotary Club is proud to announce its 2024 grant recipients. The club, known for making great strides in our local community, has shelled out grants to a few deserving organizations. Those that get to pocket a little extra support this year include: Meals on Wheels Bluffton, Bluffton Self Help, SOAR – Special Olympics and Recreation, and the South Carolina Nurse Retention Initiative. Each organization works on different fronts to make our community a better place, and these grants will truly help them continue their good work.

In addition to their grants, the club has also awarded three promising students with scholarships for Fall 2024. These lucky scholars are Riley Burkhart from Bluffton High School, Caleb Winget from Hilton Head Christian Academy, and Kristen Claffy from May River High School. Big congrats, guys! We’re expecting big things from you in the future!

HRMC Welcomes New Doc

Let’s give a warm Lowcountry welcome to Dr. Mark Wikenheiser, the newest member of the Coastal Plains Physician Associates as an orthopedic surgeon. With over 30 years of orthopedic surgical experience, Dr. Wikenheiser is a heavy hitter in the medical world. He’s moved from the frosty North Dakota all the way to South Carolina just to be with us and his daughter who works at the Medical University of South Carolina. How sweet! With such dedication and years of experience, we’re thrilled to have him joining our medical community.

Opening Doors at Allendale County Hospital

In more health news, Allendale County Hospital just opened a special wing – the Allendale County Hospital Advanced Wound Care – dedicated to caring for patients with wounds. The center will use a comprehensive approach with traditional and advanced therapies to aid and accelerate the healing process. Lari Gooding, Allendale County Hospital’s CEO, emphasizes that the goal is to treat not only the wound but the root cause of the wound. So, if you ever scrape your knee too badly, you know where to go!

USC Salkehatchie’s New Associate Dean

University of South Carolina Salkehatchie has crowned Dr. Sarah Miller as the associate dean for academic and student affairs. Miller isn’t new to Salkehatchie – she’s been a part of the campus and its communities since 2006. She has actively worked to provide valuable opportunities for students and communities and earned numerous awards for her dedication and contribution. Miller’s keen interest in history and education will surely be a guiding light for USC Salkehatchie’s future.

Whether you’re celebrating grant money, feeling healthier already with the new medical facilities, or stoked for the new dean, today surely is a day to cheer on the goings-on in the Lowcountry. Tune in next time for more local news updates!
