Beaufort County All Set to Amp Up Recycling with a New Provider

Heads up, Beaufort County folks! A new plan is lining up to boost up your recycling game, one bottle, can, or box at a time. It’s all part of making sure we’re doing our bit for to maintain the clean and green vibe of Lowcountry.

To give you some quick figures, currently, we’re dealing with a whopping 155,000 tons of garbage and a measly 22,000 pounds of recycling materials. But don’t fret, as Beaufort County has joined hands with a new recycling firm to skyrocket those numbers.

Step Up the Recycling Game

Meet our new recycling folks, I2 Recycling. They aren’t just about collecting your recyclables, but also underpin the importance of cleanliness and rightful waste management. “This contract is starting with a new vendor who we’ve not used previously, and we’re really excited to partner with them. They are a recycling company,” says Victoria Hoffman, Manager at Beaufort County Solid Waste and Recycling Program.

In fact, the county is investing over $450,000 into this program. The new partnership is set to kick off on August 1, and guess what – they are also bringing in a few new rules for all of us who wish to dump our recyclables the right way.

New Rules, Who Dis?

Well, the changes aren’t ground-shaking, but it’s mainly about doing little things right. For starters, we are asked to take off the plastic caps or tops from our bottles before tossing them in the recycling bin. Also, be sure to pull your recyclable waste out of plastic bags before it goes into their designated bins.

“Food, film, foam and bagged recyclables, a bag, recyclable, looks like a piece of trash… We also would like for your plastic containers ones and twos to be eight ounces to, and accepting, a gallon sized jug,” adds on Victoria Hoffman.

Goals Galore

So, the big goal across counties is to fetch a 50-50 equal split between garbage and recycling numbers by 2030. Beaufort County is all set and ready to work towards that green goal. “And hey, did I mention that a composting program is also in the plans? And we do plan on spreading more details via some upcoming informational sessions,” she ends on an exciting note.
