The practice is thrilled to announce the addition of two highly qualified professionals to their team: obstetrician and gynecologist Curtis J. Elam, M.D., FACOG, and nurse practitioner Melissa Mesenburg, DNP, APRN, FNP-C. This expansion is set to enhance and broaden access to women’s health care for residents in the Lowcountry.

Meet Dr. Curtis J. Elam

Dr. Elam brings a wealth of experience to the practice, having dedicated his career to general, routine, and specialized obstetrical and gynecological care for women at all stages of life. He has honed his skills over decades in the field, gaining expertise in laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, including advanced techniques for pelvic floor reconstruction and treatments for stress urinary incontinence through slings or sutures. His impressive journey began with a medical degree from the University of Tennessee and a residency at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Dr. Elam knew he was destined for a career in medicine at a young age. His service in the active-duty U.S. Naval Reserve, where he worked as both a battalion and regimental surgeon with the Marines, solidified his choice to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology. He has been serving women since 1992 and most recently held the position of staff physician and OBGYN department head at the Clyburn Center for Primary Care, in addition to working at Aiken Regional Medical Center in Aiken, SC.

Introducing Nurse Practitioner Melissa Mesenburg

Joining Dr. Elam is Nurse Practitioner Melissa Mesenburg, who completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a focus on family medicine at The Medical University of South Carolina in 2020. Her doctoral thesis aimed to improve women’s health through educational initiatives, showcasing her commitment to making a difference in the community. Melissa brings a strong background to the table, having worked for four years in the Beaufort area as a family nurse practitioner. Most recently, she served as the director of clinical operations at Friends of Caroline Hospice in Ridgeland.

Originally from Ohio, Mesenburg has always had a passion for women’s health, which began during her time as a registered nurse—a role she occupied for 14 years. She became especially fond of the field while working as a postpartum nurse at the Beaufort Memorial Collins Birthing Center in 2014, leading her to pursue further education and earn her doctorate.
