Exploring the History of the Beaufort Water Festival

BEAUFORT, SC – The 68th edition of the renowned Beaufort Water Festival is about to commence, with a rich history stretching back to the mid-20th century. Originating in 1956, an assemblage of Beaufort’s business magnates inaugurated the first Water Festival, anticipating a turnout of a few hundred attendees. Surprisingly, around 4,000 locals and visitors from beyond the region showed up, marking the beginning of a tradition that has been flourishing ever since.

The Origin and Initial Years of the Festival

The Water Festival’s name was inspired by Beaufort’s intimate connection with the water, with one organizer stating, “You can’t be around Beaufort without being on the water, it’s just part of the city.” With a variety of events such as beauty pageants and dances, the festival rapidly attracted public attention.

The intention of the business owners who started the festival was to promote Beaufort as an attractive destination. Utilizing existing local events as a foundation, the festival has grown over the past 68 years to accommodate up to 70,000 attendees in some years.

Memorable Moments from the Festival

As part of the unofficial festival history, numerous exhilarating moments have been archived. From a parachutist unexpectedly landing on a building’s roof to a wide range of activities spanning pickleball to croquet, the festival has always been a source of unique adventures.

The Festival–A Family Tradition

The Beaufort Water Festival has evolved into more than a local event; it has become a cherished tradition for many families in the Lowcountry. With the festival’s constant growth, it now sees family members coming back for homecoming, including those who no longer live in the region. The festival has managed to retain and attract generations of attendees thanks to its vibrant spirit. This year’s opening ceremony promises to continue this tradition of community and celebration.
