Meet Ralph Sizemore: Beaufort’s Proud Veteran

In the charming city of Beaufort, where southern hospitality meets rich history, one local veteran has quite the story to tell. Let’s give a round of applause to Ralph Sizemore, who has been a noteworthy figure in our community, proudly representing the values and dedication of our nation’s heroes. At 69 years old, Ralph’s journey from his time in the United States Navy to a life dedicated to service continues to inspire many.

A Naval Journey Begins

It all started for Ralph back in 1973 when he joined the Navy right here in Beaufort. After going through his Boot Camp training in Orlando, Florida, he was assigned to the USS Canopus (AS-34). This impressive ship, stationed in Holy Loch, Scotland, had Ralph monitoring radiation levels—not a small task considering the nature of submarine operations. It was a time when ensuring safety was of utmost importance, especially for those submarines being serviced.

A Variety of Roles

But Ralph didn’t stop there. After his time on the USS Canopus, he moved on to serve aboard the USS Raleigh (LPD-1) as a hull technician. This role involved maintaining the integrity of the ship, a crucial part of the daily operations. Following this, he transitioned to the USS Cone (DD-866), continuing to hone his skills in naval service. After a fulfilling career in the Navy, Ralph officially separated from service in 1979.

Furthering Education

Utilizing the GI Bill, Ralph decided it was time to invest in his future. He enrolled at Orangeburg Technical College, where he earned a degree in Animal and Plant Science. Farming was his next adventure, and he embraced the rural life for a year. However, the call of steady work led him back to the city, where he found his niche in a chemical plant in Orangeburg. There, he excelled in plant operations while also taking on the additional responsibilities of a firefighter and ambulance driver. Talk about a well-rounded guy!

Facing Challenges

Like many veterans, Ralph has faced obstacles on the path of life—specifically, disabilities stemming from his service. But instead of allowing these challenges to define him, he chose to give back. Now, he dedicates part of his time helping the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) at the Beaufort Naval Hospital. This selfless service is a testament to his character and a reminder of the commitment many veterans have to their fellow citizens.

A Community Inspiration

Ralph’s story is not just a tale of military service; it is a remarkable reminder of resilience and community spirit. His journey is a source of inspiration for many Beaufort residents. Whether he’s at the hospital helping fellow veterans or reminiscing about his days in the service, Ralph embodies the dedication and spirit of those who have worn the uniform.
