Beaufort’s Mayoral Candidates Share Their Vision Ahead of Election

As the November 5 election approaches, Beaufort residents are getting to know their mayoral candidates and the positions they’re taking on important local issues. Candidates Josh Scallate and Phil Cromer recently had a chance to chat about their vision for the city, and it sounds like both are eager to tackle a range of topics, from the marina to infrastructure and community engagement.

Marina Management: Seeking Community Input

When it comes to the future of Beaufort’s marina, Scallate emphasizes the importance of listening to the community. He talks about a need for conducting a survey and hosting discussions to truly understand what residents want. “As representatives, we need to first understand what our community wants in a marina,” he says, highlighting that community-driven decision-making will be pivotal for future developments.

Cromer agrees, noting that a public survey is essential to guide decisions on leasing the marina. He mentions that since an ordinance was not in place in 2019 for leasing the marina, the previous lease stands void. Cromer suggests that the city could either manage the marina itself or contract with a saltwater marina operator, allowing the city to collect fees that could then support future repairs.

Addressing Infrastructure Concerns

Both candidates express a strong commitment to addressing the infrastructure challenges in Beaufort. Scallate points out that a study from 2016 and another from 2019 have already highlighted significant issues that should have been prioritized long ago. He believes proactive conversations with state and federal agencies could open doors to much-needed funding.

Cromer, meanwhile, mentions that the city is already in the process of hiring a consultant to explore options for fixing structural issues within Waterfront Park. Given its importance to Beaufort’s economy and tourism, he believes it’s vital to secure funding from state and federal resources. “The park is our crown jewel,” he notes, and any repairs must be executed judiciously to ensure minimal disruption to park visitors.

Smart Growth and Sustainable Development

Both candidates recognize that Beaufort is facing rapid growth, particularly along Highway 170. Scallate sees the need for development codes and comprehensive plans to align more closely, suggesting adjustments that foster multimodal transportation and environmental resiliency. “As your mayor, this will be a priority,” he affirms.

Cromer echoes these sentiments, emphasizing the need to revisit zoning regulations to ensure growth is sustainable and preserves what makes Beaufort special. He mentions engaging the community and collaborating with regional partners to devise smart growth strategies that include walking and bike paths to alleviate traffic congestion.

Community Engagement and Transparency

Both candidates emphasize that community engagement is crucial for effective governance. Scallate mentions the importance of gathering input proactively, stating that it’s essential to understand what constituents truly want before any design work begins. He believes this approach can help prevent misunderstandings and ensure that the community feels heard.

Cromer concurs, stressing that elected officials need to work closely with residents, especially when addressing infrastructure challenges. He believes building public buy-in is key to long-term success, arguing that “going forward, the city should engage residents about the issue(s) and review possible options together.”

Improving Parks and Quality of Life

For both candidates, enhancing parks is an important part of improving the community’s quality of life. Scallate reflects on the transformation he’s seen firsthand in areas like Southside Park, sharing his pride in being part of projects that foster a sense of belonging and safety. Cromer adds that parks provide recreational opportunities and can significantly impact environmental preservation.

Conclusion: A Crossroads for Beaufort

As Scallate and Cromer articulate their visions, it’s clear that Beaufort stands at a crossroads, deciding between focusing on the past or preparing for the future. Both candidates express a shared hope of balancing historical respect with the need for innovative leadership, emphasizing their commitment to a transparent government that serves all residents. With the election just around the corner, it’s an exciting time for Beaufort, as residents look forward to a future shaped by their voices.
