But the one that’s probably most fresh in your mind is the green light given to developer Dick Stewart and his team at 303 Associates. Yep, the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBOA) graced them with the go-ahead to put up a nifty new three-story apartment building right on the corner of Charles and Port Republic Streets. Exciting stuff, right?

Blast From the Past: Hurricane of 1940
We’re stepping back big time now—way back to August 11, 1940, when a pretty wild hurricane blew through Beaufort. This monster gust of wind had a speed of 104 mph and made quite a mess at Parris Island. That catastrophe left us with a hefty $1.5 million repair bill.

Speaking of Parris Island, did you know that just a couple of days after the hurricane on August 13, 1940, the Marine post there got a name change? It was re-named to the Recruit Depot, Marine Barracks, Parris Island. It’s always fun to learn new facts about our home city, right?
Exciting Change in Basketball
Are there any Beaufort Academy basketball fans out there? Back in 2019, the academy was thrilled to present Bobby Smith as the head boys’ basketball coach. Here’s hoping Bobby has brought some fresh plays and exciting games to the court since his appointment.
New Fire Department Chief
Speaking of exciting announcements and bold moves, in 2021, the City of Beaufort-Town of Port Royal Fire Department welcomed a new boss. Tim Ogden became the new fire department chief, replacing Reece Bertholf. Bertholf didn’t go far though, he took on the role of the Deputy City Manager for the City of Beaufort.
Celebrating Local Champions
While we’re strolling down memory lane, let’s take a moment to celebrate our local champions. Do you remember that time in 2019 when Rob Simmons rocked the Beaufort City Championship golf tournament at Fripp Island? That guy bagged the title for a record fourth time by winning with a massive gap of 11 strokes. Amazing, right?
